"Horrifying" larva-infested chilli flakes pulled from NTUC FairPrice shelves
A Singaporean man and his family discovered the white insect larvae in the bottle while making pizza
SINGAPORE — Supermarket chain NTUC FairPrice has pulled the Morrisons brand of chilli flakes from its shelves, after white insect larvae were discovered in one of its bottles.
According to The Straits Times, a man and his family discovered the larvae during a pizza-making session.
After pouring the chilli flakes over their homemade pizzas, the man - who goes by the name Alan - was shocked to find many worms wriggling on the plates.
"My family members had eaten the pizzas without noticing the worms," the man told the Stomp website.
According to him, he bought the product at FairPrice Finest branch in Marine Parade Central on 27 January.
After pouring the chilli flakes out of the bottle, he shared photos of white insect larvae among the flakes, which he said was "so horrifying and grotesque".
NTUC FairPrice apologised and removed the product
The Straits Times reported that a FairPrice spokesman had apologised for the unpleasant experience and thanked the customer for making it known to them.
"FairPrice takes product quality very seriously, and we are conducting an investigation into this matter," the spokesman said.
"As a precautionary measure, we have also removed the product from our shelves. In addition, a full refund has been arranged and we are in contact with the customer to follow up."
