The revelation that Liverpool are set to “shatter their transfer record” is not actually as exciting as it sounds when you realise that the man who currently holds that record is Andy Carroll. But shatter it this summer they will – eventually.

Virgil van Dijk was the first attempt, but that didn’t quite go to plan. Mohamed Salah was the next man tipped to take Carroll’s crown, but there are doubts about that deal too. So step forward Andy’s latest successor as the most expensive guy in Merseyside football history: Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

The Sunday Express says the Reds are ready to make a record-shattering offer of £40m for the Arsenal winger in a “last-ditch attempt” to stop him signing a new contract at the Emirates.

The Gunners have offered the Ox a £100,000 a week deal, but he’s reluctant to sign it after being left mentally scarred by Arsene Wenger deploying him as a wing-back last season.

Jurgen Klopp also has 10s of millions burning a hole in his tracksuit bottoms for a new centre-back after the Van Dijk calamity, and he could give them to Middlesbrough.

The Sun on Sunday says Boro captain Ben Gibson is on Klopp’s defensive wanted list, along with Burnley’s Michael Keane. The relegated Teessiders would want “at least £20m” for Gibson, who is also being tracked by Tottenham, West Brom and Leicester.

Liverpool are also interested in Southampton midfielder Dusan Tadic, reports the Sunday Times. The Serbian international has a release clause of £13m in his contract, as well as another clause saying that, as a Saints player, he is obliged to sign for Liverpool at some point.

West Ham have finally given up trying to sign a hot, young 20-goal-a-season striker and will instead just buy Olivier Giroud, predicts the Sunday Mirror.

The 30-year-old Frenchman has said he will not accept being a bit-part player at Arsenal, amid interest from Marseille and various Italian clubs. But the Hammers are apparently “confident” they can persuade the devilishly handsome centre-forward to remain in London with a £20m bid.

Another typically unimaginative West Ham signing could be Joe Hart, who the Sun on Sunday says has been offered a “loan-to-buy” deal by Slaven Bilic.

This would involve the Hammers taking him on loan for the season and then buying him next summer for £18m, even if he makes loads of mistakes in the meantime and they change their mind.

Elsewhere, Arsenal are set to complete a £10m move for CSKA Moscow’s 21-year-old midfielder Aleksandr Golovin (Mirror), Real Madrid’s Alvaro Morata is trying to persuade Gareth Bale to join him at Manchester United (Star).

And wantaway Leicester winger Riyad Mahrez has an offer to join Arsenal but is waiting for Barcelona to come in for him (Sport). We’re all waiting for Barcelona to come in for us, Riyad mate.
