HOTD confirms season 2 returning cast as filming begins

Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon is now filming its second season at London's Leavesden Studios.

Based on author George RR Martin's Fire & Blood, the series concerns the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros back when they were ruled by the dragon-riding Targaryens.

Matt Smith returns for season 2 as Prince Daemon Targaryen while Emma D'Arcy reprises her role as Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen; Steve Toussaint is back as Lord Corlys Velaryon; Eve Best as Princess Rhaenys Targaryen; Fabien Frankel as Ser Criston Cole; Rhys Ifans as Ser Otto Hightower; Ewan Mitchell as Prince Aemond Targaryen; Sonoya Mizuno as Mysaria, and Tom Glynn-Carney as King Aegon II Targaryen.

Alongside this, actors Harry Collett (as Jacaerys Velaryon), Bethany Antonia (Lady Baela Targaryen), Phoebe Campbell (Lady Rhaena Targaryen), Phia Saban (Princess Helaena Targaryen), Jefferson Hall (Jason Lannister) and Matthew Needham (Lord Larys Strong) are all returning too.

Marking the beginning of production on season 2, new showrunner Ryan Condal shared in a statement (via Sky): "House of the Dragon has returned. We are thrilled to be shooting again with members of our original family as well as new talents on both sides of the camera.

"All your favourite characters will soon be conspiring at the council tables, marching with their armies, and riding their dragons into battle. We can't wait to share what we have in store."

Two months ago, HBO boss Casey Bloys suggested that 2024 was a "good guess" for the return of the Targaryens to our screens. However, no release date has been confirmed.

In the mean time, is the world of Westeros expanding again? Bloys explained that more Game of Thrones spin-offs will only happen if the story is right.

"My philosophy is a good script is number one priority," he said. "I am not doing it based on wanting to have one [show] a year, two a year. I want to do it based on the scripts that we’re excited about."

Game of Thrones seasons 1-8 are available on DVD and Blu-ray. House of the Dragon airs on HBO in the US, and on Sky Atlantic and NOW in the UK.
