Hotel to expand into 15th-century building

A hotel in Lincoln has won permission to expand into a 15th-century building.

The White Hart Hotel will convert space above a tourist information centre, at 8-9 Castle Hill, into four additional bedrooms, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

The timber-framed merchant house, also known as Leigh Pemberton House, had been used as Airbnb accommodation.

The information centre will be unaffected.

The case officer at the City of Lincoln Council said the proposed use was “appropriate” and fell within the Central Lincolnshire Local Plan – making it a routine decision to grant approval.

Another application by the White Hart Hotel, for a swimming pool and spa complex, to be constructed inside the main hotel, is awaiting a verdict from planners in the coming weeks.

The White Hart is known as the birthplace of the tank. Engineers from William Foster and Co Ltd, a city manufacturer, designed a prototype in a suite at the hotel.
