“House of the Dragon” renewed for season 3

"We could not be more thrilled to continue the story of House Targaryen and watch this team burn bright again," says HBO's head of drama series and films.

Back to Westeros we go! Ahead of the season 2 premiere, HBO has renewed House of the Dragon for a third season.

The prequel series from Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin and showrunner Ryan Condal, based on Fire & Blood, tells the story of House Targaryen and is set 200 years before the events of the original HBO juggernaut.

"George, Ryan, and the rest of our incredible executive producers, cast, and crew, have reached new heights with the phenomenal second season of House of the Dragon," Francesca Orsi, HBO's head of drama series and films said in a statement. "We are in awe of the dragon-sized effort the entire team has put into the creation of a spectacular season 2, with a scope and scale that is only rivaled by its heart."

Returning cast members for season 2, which premieres June 16, include Matt Smith, Emma D’Arcy, Olivia Cooke, Rhys Ifans, Steve Toussaint, Eve Best, Fabien Frankel, Matthew Needham, Sonoya Mizuno, Tom Glynn-Carney, Ewan Mitchell, Harry Collett, Bethany Antonia, Phoebe Campbell, Phia Saban, and Jefferson Hall.

Previously announced newcomers include Abubakar Salim, Gayle Rankin, Freddie Fox, Simon Russell Beale, Clinton Liberty, Jamie Kenna, Kieran Bew, Tom Bennett, Tom Taylor, and Vincent Regan.

Nominated for nine Emmys and the recipient of one, the debut season of House of the Dragon drew in nearly 10 million viewers across all platforms during its premiere, shattering the record of most-watched series premiere in the network's history. It was renewed for season 2 just one week after its debut.

In addition to season 3, HBO is also working on GoT prequel series Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and Ten Thousand Ships, the latter of which was recently confirmed by Martin.
