Pixel 2 XL users will be able to use Google Assistant in Singapore English when the smartphone goes on sale on November 15

Global internet giant Google today announced that its voice-activated virtual personal assistant Google Assistant will be made available in Singaporean English.

According to a press statement by the company, Pixel 2 XL users will have access to the feature starting November 15, when the smartphone goes on sale in the country.

Users of Android phones 6.0+ (Marshmallow and above) will also be able to use the feature over the “next couple of weeks,” followed by iPhone devices “soon.”

The update includes an improved ability for the product to recognise voice speaking in local Singaporean accent, and provide locally relevant information, built through Google’s expertise in natural language understanding, deep learning, computer vision, and understanding user context.

“Singaporeans are avid smartphone users who are always on the go. With this latest update to the Google Assistant, we hope to help more Singaporeans get things done quickly on their phones – take a selfie, get directions from Google Maps, find your photos, get help with translation, and more. With the Google Pixel 2 XL now available in Singapore, we hope to offer the best Google experience bringing our hardware, software, and AI capabilities to more people here,” said Google Singapore Country Director Stephanie Davis.

The Google Asistant service is activated by saying “Ok Google” or by touching and holding the home button of the device. The product enables users to perform tasks such as sending text message, set reminders, or get directions.

Apart from Singapore, it is already available in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Germany, France, Japan, Brazil, India, Mexico, Spain, Korea, and Indonesia.

As artificial intelligence technology develops, voice-activated personal assistants are increasingly able to recognise local accent and informal use of the English language.

In markets such as India, apart from being available in English, Google Assistant is also available in the Hindi language.

The same goes to Google Assistant’s service in Canada, which is also available in French.
