Ian Poulter is the clubhouse leader thanks to a final round 67 at the British Open
On a golf course that has not let up all week for the best golfers in the world, it was an Englishman that criticized it earlier in the tournament that has a very good shot at winning his first major championship.
Ian Poulter rode momentum he usually bottles for the Ryder Cup on Sunday at the British Open during the middle of his round to post a round of 4-under 67 to sit in the clubhouse at 1-over, hoping it will be good enough for a playoff as the leaders get to the back nine of Muirfield.
It was an eagle-birdie-birdie-birdie stretch on holes 9-12 that got Poulter in the conversation, and despite a bogey on the 16th hole and failing to birdie the 17th Poulter tied Jason Dufner for the low round of the weekend and now will sit and wait to see if Lee Westwood, Hunter Mahan and the rest of the guys on the golf course can come back to him.
What was the key to Poulter's charge? A combination of precise iron play and holing some clutch putts. Poulter hit an incredible second shot to the par-5 9th hole, and followed that up with some great birdie putts on Nos. 10, 11 and 12.
After his birdie on No. 12, Poulter hit a laser iron shot on the par-3 13th but couldn't convert that birdie putt, ending his run, and despite a great golf swing on the 18th hole, the ball wouldn't release and he had to settle for a par and a final score of 1-over.
