Luther star Idris Elba has recalled being hurt during filming for his new Apple TV+ thriller series Hijack.

Starring as Sam Nelson, an accomplished business negotiator who ends up aboard a hijacked plane on his way to London, Elba's character is forced to use his skills to save the passengers.

Speaking to Digital Spy and other press, Elba said that the action sequences were all designed with the cramped space of a plane in mind: "We designed all the action sequences with what we've got.

"Sam does a lot of sneaking around the plane. Me sneaking on a plane is like, bro, what are you doing? We can see you. So it meant that I had to either get lower or we had to figure out another way," said Elba.

"It really adds to the drama and the reality of this thing," he added. "The fight sequences were certainly hard to shoot. They were choreographed within the space. If we hurt ourselves, we just took a breather and carried on.

"We didn't try and change the choreography not to hurt ourselves, because in this instance, the fight sequences were based on what we would do rather than 'this is a fight sequence'.

Recalling a particular scene between himself and the head hijacker, played by Neil Maskell, Elba said: "One of the memorable ones for me is the one where we have Neil's character and this gun and this tiny kitchen space.

"I'm a big man so it just wasn't easy to manoeuvre around and fight this guy, especially if my character is not a fighter and is fighting out of desperation, and he's frightened of getting shot. Not only is he frightened of getting shot, he doesn't want the plane to go down because of a bullet. So there's all this stuff that was part of the design of the action."

Hijack will premiere on Apple TV+ on June 28.
