Imran Khan shooting – live: Former Pakistan PM wounded in ‘assassination attempt’

Former Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan has been wounded in an apparent assassination attempt after a gunman opened fire at his protest march in eastern Punjab.

The shooting took place near Allah Ho Chowk in Wazirabad, where the former prime minister was traveling in a large convoy of trucks and cars heading towards the capital, Islamabad.

Mr Khan is conducting the protest march from his political heartlands to the capital Islamabad, to challenge the current prime minister Shahbaz Sharif’s government and demand early elections.

Members of Mr Khan’s party the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) said that the former prime minister has been wounded but not seriously injured. Local media reports said he had been shot in the foot.

Two other members of Mr Khan’s party – Faisal Javed and Ahmed Chattha – have also been injured in the attack, Dawn reported.

The march is the ousted prime minister’s second this year since he was removed from office through a vote of no-confidence in April.

Former Pakistan cricket captain speaks out

Wasim Akram, former captain of the Pakistan cricket team, said he is “deeply disturbed” by the events in Wazirabad.

He said on Twitter: “Deeply disturbed about the events unfolding in Wazirabad . Our prayers with Imran BHAI and everyone there.

“We as a country must come together and not allow anyone to distort our national unity.”

Khan also played cricket for Pakistan and captained its Test side before he moved into politics.

His sporting career spanned two decades after he made his debut at age 16. Between 1971 and 1976 he played for Worcestershire and his Test debut was against England at Edgbaston in June 1971.

He had a career high when he led Pakistan to the victory in the 1992 World Cup.

Pakistani army calls shooting ‘highly condemnable'

The Pakistani army has called the “firing incident” at the protest march in Wazirabad “highly condemnable”.

They said in a statement: “Sincere prayers for the precious life lost and speedy recovery and wellbeing of Chairman PTI Mr Imran Khan and all those injured in this unfortunate incident.”

Doctor says Khan is stable

A doctor working at the hospital where Khan is says the former Pakistan prime minister is stable and conscious after he was shot in the leg.

“This is only the initial assessment, and we are taking him to the operation theatre for detailed evaluation,” Faisal Sultan told reporters.

He said fragments of bullet were found in his leg and his tibia bone is chipped.

A medical board of four members has now been formed to monitor Khan’s health.

Malala says ‘violence never acceptable'

Posting in the aftermath of the shooting, Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai said on Twitter: “Attacks on leaders of any political belief or party are always wrong.

“And violence is never an acceptable protest. Wishing @ImranKhanPTI a full recovery.”

Doctor speaks of treating people at scene

A doctor at the scene near Allah Ho Chowk in Wazirabad told a Sky News reporter who was also there that he treated two people for injuries after the shooting.

He said one person had been wounded in the hip, but both were in a stable condition now.

Two other members of Mr Khan’s party – Faisal Javed and Ahmed Chattha – have also been injured in the attack, Dawn reported.

Party aide says Khan ‘not seriously hurt'

A party has told Reuters that Khan isn’t seriously hurt but that he was wounded in the shin.

Asad Umar said: “A man opened fire with an automatic weapon. Several people are wounded. Imran Khan is also injured.”

Khan is now reportedly in a hospital in Lahore where he is being treated for his injuries.

Umar continued, speaking to reporters at the scene: “He is being taken to a hospital in Lahore, but he is not seriously wounded. A bullet hit him in the leg.”

Suspected gunman says he shot Imran Khan for 'misleading people'

A video has been released of the suspected gunman who shot at former prime minister Imran Khan during his ongoing protest in Wazirabad.

In the video shared by local media, the suspect says that he shot at Mr Khan for “misleading people”.

“He (Imran) was misleading the people and I could not bear watching it so I killed him … attempted to kill him.”

Clear assassination attempt, says PTI chief

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) spokesperson Fawad Chaudhry has said that the attack on former prime minister Imran Khan was a “clear assassination attempt”.

“It was a clear assassination attempt. Khan was hit but he is stable. There was a lot of bleeding,” he was quoted as saying to Reuters.

“If the shooter had not been stopped by people there, the entire PTI leadership would have been wiped out.”

4 PTI members injured in attack on Imran Khan

PTI member Hammad Azhar has said that four members of the party were injured along with former prime minister Imran Khan in Wazirabad.

The injured members named by Mr Azhar in a statement on Twitter are: Ahmed Chattha, Omer Meyer, Rashid, and Faisal Javed.

Mr Azhar said that all the injured party members are stable and receiving medical care.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Fawad Chaudhry has vowed revenge after former prime minister Imran Khan was shot at during his ongoing protest march in Wazirabad.

In a speech delivered moments after Mr Khan was shot, Mr Chaudhry said: “An attack on Imran Khan is an attack on Pakistan. We will take revenge for this.”

He then asked the crowd of supporters: “Will you take revenge for our bleeding leader?”The crowd can be heard shouting back: “Yes.”
