‘Inside Out 2’ Out Of This World!: Sequel Crosses $1B Global Box Office; Fastest Animated Movie Ever To Milestone

UPDATED: There’s joy all around as Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out 2 has crossed the coveted $1B milestone at the worldwide box office. With $1,014.8B through 19 days, this is the quickest time to the mark for an animated movie ever, besting the previous record holder, Frozen 2, which got there in 25. Only 11 animated films have ever crossed the $1B threshold, and of those, Disney and Pixar combined now have eight.

Directed by Kelsey Mann, Inside Out 2 is also the first film of the year to get to $1B.

The 3rd international box office session was an estimated $108M, a 37% ease in the holdover markets, with continued No. 1s in most majors. The overseas cume is now $545.5M across 45 markets. This weekend saw Inside Out 2 pass Shrek Forever After ($514M), Madagascar 3 ($531M) and Finding Dory ($543M) to become the No. 18 animated release of all time internationally.

The running domestic total is $469.3M. Inside Out 2 has jumped up the all-time animated chart in North America, now at No. 5 after topping Toy Story 3 ($415M), The Lion King ($423M), Toy Story 4 ($434M) and Shrek 2 ($445M).

Overseas, strong holds were seen China (-13%), Australia (-23%), Spain (-24%), UK (-26%), Brazil (-28%), Korea (-29%), France (-34%), Germany (-40%) and Mexico (-46%). In China, the drop is the second-strongest hold for a studio film since the pandemic.

IO2 is now within the Top 10 all-time highest-grossing films in industry history in Chile (No. 1), Uruguay (No. 2), Latin America region (No. 3), Mexico (No. 3), Colombia (No. 4), Central America (No. 4), Argentina (No. 5 for admissions), Ecuador (No. 5), Paraguay (No. 5), Philippines (No. 5), Brazil (No. 6), Peru (No. 7) and Bolivia (No. 9).

It is also the highest grossing animated film ever across the Latin America region and Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, Egypt, Lebanon and Turkey. It’s the 2nd highest grossing animated film of all time in Italy, Mexico, Central America, Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, Uruguay, Philippines and Greece.

As previously noted, New Zealand was a new market this session where IO2 opened at No. 1 with $1.3M ($1.7M including previews). This is the 2nd highest animated opening weekend ever in industry history and the best for Pixar and Disney Animation. In Hong Kong, previews for Inside Out 2 posted No. 1 for the weekend, ahead of the full opening of Despicable Me 4 and A Quiet Place: Day One there.

The Top 5 markets to date are Mexico ($81.9M), UK ($40.2M), Korea ($39.2M), Brazil ($39M) and Italy ($31.3M).
