Apple's new operating system iOS 11 is out today, meaning you will soon be able to update your iPhone to gain access to all its latest features.

Last week, Apple unveiled the new iPhone 8 and iPhone X smartphones, both of which will be running on its latest operating system.

iOS 11 has some major new features coming to the iPhone for the first time, such as phone-to-phone Apple Pay, a smarter Siri and a redesigned, customisable control centre.

Here are all the key things you need to know about iOS 11 ahead of its release next week.

When is iOS 11 released?

iOS 11 will be available to download from September 19 for existing iPhones. The iPhone 8 goes on general sale on September 22 and the iPhone X will be in stores from November 3, with both phones launching with iOS 11 software installed.

Apple's software updates are typically out at around 6pm UK time.

Available devices

iOS 11 will be available on the trio of new iPhones and be compatible with the following models of iPhone, iPad and iPod.

  • iPhone: 5s, 6, 6 Plus, 6s, 6s Plus, SE, 7, 7 Plus, 8, 8 Plus, X
  • iPad: 5th generation (2017); Mini 2, 3 and 4; all Air models and all Pro Models
  • iPod Touch: 6th generation (2015)

If you own an iPhone 5 and iPhone 5c you will not be able to get iOS 11. Apple is also dropping support for the 2012 iPad 4.

Key features

iOS 11 includes hundreds of new features like a redesigned control centre, better multitasking, improvements to the camera and new safety features. Some of the best include:

Peer-to-peer Apple Pay

iOS 11 will see peer-to-peer Apple pay coming to the iPhone, meaning you can easily send money through the phone's messaging app with a tap of Touch ID. This will only apply to the US at first, but the UK is likely to be one of the first countries to follow.
