iPhone 5S slated for unveiling September 10
The next generation iPhone will be officially introduced at an Apple keynote event on Tuesday, September 10, according to the website All Things Digital. The anticipated iPhone 5S may be unveiled alongside a new, more affordable phone from Apple, the iPhone 5C.
In the pre-launch rumor frenzy, one of the most recurring reports on American tech websites is that of a fingerprint reader on the latest iPhone. This technology is said to be used to unlock the phone, enhancing privacy and security by preventing unknown fingers from using the device. Hearsay also suggests a more powerful processor, a new home button, and an updated camera said to feature 13-megapixel resolution and a double flash.
The iPhone 5S will run on iOS 7, the latest version of Apple’s operating system, released last June. The interface has been entirely revisited and presents an even cleaner feel, using transparency, overlay and 3D effects. It has also shed the element of “skeumorphism” – the tendency to approximate the appearance of objects from real life – in the calendar and the notepad, for example.
Two oft-criticized apps, Siri and Maps, have been corrected. The iOS 7 also includes a new Control Center, enhanced multitasking abilities and new features such as iTunes Radio, which can create playlists based on the user's favorite genre or artist.
Several leaks suggest that in conjunction with the launch of this new high-end smartphone, Apple may present a less expensive phone with more modest performance. This hypothetical “bargain” iPhone is even said to be available in multiple colors.
If the new iPhone 5S is indeed unveiled on September 10, its worldwide release should follow a few days later.
