ITV thriller Malpractice has been renewed for a second season.

The medical series debuted earlier this year, and follows the story of Dr Lucinda Edwards (Niamh Algar) as an investigation into a patient's death while she was on shift takes a toll on her life.

ITV have now confirmed that another season of the show is on the way, with the new episodes set to "delve into another suspected case of medical negligence".

Helen Behan and Jordan Kouamé are set to return as Dr Norma Callahan and Dr George Adjei.

“We are all delighted with the response Malpractice received and [writer] Grace [Ofori-Attah] has an exciting new story, exploring a new medical malpractice to grip the audience all over again," said ITV's head of drama Polly Hill.

"A huge thanks to [executive [producer] Simon [Heath] and everyone at World who made the first series the brilliant and unmissable drama that Malpractice became.”

Ofori-Attah added: “I’m thrilled to be bringing another series of Malpractice to TV screens alongside Polly and the fantastic team at World.

"I can’t wait to delve into a new and exciting area of medicine, exploring the complex bonds and divisions within hospital teams that push our characters to their limits.”

Earlier this year, Behan opened up about comparisons between Malpractice and Line of Duty, notably given both shows are produced by the same company, World.

"I suppose the danger with World Productions is it being compared to Line of Duty, the Mecca of World Productions productions," she told Radio Times and other press.

"But no, I didn't feel that at all. It felt very, very unique when I read it. I didn't think there was anything else like it. It's absolutely its own thing."

Malpractice airs on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
