Jack Antonoff Explains Why Working with Taylor Swift and Lana Del Rey Has Gotten 'Loonier and Loonier'

The songwriter/producer opened up about working with his longtime A-list collaborators on 'Late Night with Seth Meyers'

Great collaborative relationships simply just click — like Jack Antonoff with Lana Del Rey and Taylor Swift.

The Bleachers frontman appeared on Thursday’s episode of Late Night with Seth Meyers and opened up about why he thinks his long-running creative partnerships with Swift, 34, and Del Rey, 38, are so significant. He explained that one thing he values in particular is how unafraid they are to get “loonier and loonier” with each release.

“I’ve had a few [relationships] — really Lana and Taylor — where we’ve worked for a long period of time and found this space where it’s like, it gets loonier and loonier and more exciting,” Antonoff shared.

The songwriter/producer — who has worked with Swift since 2014’s acclaimed 1989 and LDR since her 2019 magnum opus Norman F------ Rockwell! — attributed their ability to get more experimental in the studio to the longevity and comfort of their relationships. He said, “I’m really proud of those two because I think in my industry, there’s this endless rah-rah, pivot this way and that way.”

The Grammy winner also told the host, 49, that he sees similar qualities with his indie-rock band and in his marriage to actress Margaret Qualley, who he tied the knot with in August. “It’s the same thing with my band, the record we just made. It ties into the marriage, too,” Antonoff revealed. “Like, I think a big theme is investing in long relationships. It makes me feel sweet.”

Antonoff’s collaborative relationship with both stars led to him being among the most-nominated artists at the 2024 Grammy Awards with six total nominations.

For his contributions to Swift’s Midnights and Del Rey’s Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd, Antonoff is nominated for the coveted producer of the year as well as album of the year for both releases, as well. Songs off the two projects also received nods: Del Rey's “A&W” is up for song of the year, while “Anti-Hero” off Swift’s 10th studio album was recognized in both the song and record of the year categories.

Antonoff’s relationships with the “Cruel Summer” singer and the “Video Games” artist also go beyond the recording studio. The hitmaker recently attended Swift's 34th birthday bash in New York City, and both singers were among the guests of his and Qualley’s wedding in New Jersey over the summer.

The “Alma Mater” singer’s collaborators themselves have also expressed in the past how much they value working with him.

When Swift won the song of the year award for her Midnights track “Anti-Hero” at the 2023 MTV VMAs, she gave him a sweet shout-out, calling him “one of my best friends in the world."

The pop star continued, “He's so talented it's incomprehensible. And I'm so lucky I've been making music with him since we worked on an album called 1989. We'll continue working together til' 2089."

While Antonoff is clearly a fan of working with his frequent collaborators, next year he'll turn his attention to his own band. On March 8, Bleachers will release their fifth studio album, a self titled effort (via Dirty Hit), and take the record on the road with a North American tour.
