Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 director James Gunn has discussed why he feels Avengers: Endgame has made things more difficult for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The MCU went through some pretty cataclysmic changes around that time, including the Blip – in which half the universe was snapped out of existence – and its reversal, where people were returned to life but five years had passed.

Depending on who you ask, the MCU films and TV shows since Avengers: Endgame have either done a good job of showing the effects of the Blip on a wider and/or personal scale, or they've not.

Either way, it's an event that hangs over the head of everything.

Speaking to Rolling Stone, Gunn admitted that it's quite a hard thing to have to deal with, which is why he's glad that the (generally) more light-hearted nature of his Guardians films means he can mostly swerve it.

"I really want Marvel to keep making good movies," he said. "I think it’s really hard in the wake of the Blip.

"There’s this worldwide, universe-wide event that happened. And in truth, everybody would be stark raving mad at this point. So it’s hard to write stories in the wake of that.

"Which is why the Guardians movies have been easier, because they’re set outside of that a little bit."

It's interesting to note that Gunn doesn't seem to have an issue with Gamora dying and being replaced by a younger version, which implies that he's got some interesting ideas regarding her that the film will explore.

He also shared that he was a little thrown when he saw Endgame for the first time, as the film ends with Thor joining his team of ragtag space heroes, and there was no room in his script for the God of Thunder.

Thankfully for him, Thor: Love and Thunder came out first and dealt with that issue.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 1 and Vol 2 and the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special are streaming on Disney+. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 arrives in cinemas on May 5, 2023.
