James Gunn has teased the prospect of a crossover film involving the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Worlds of DC.

The director, who was appointed co-CEO and co-Chairman of DC Studios last year, spoke with Empire Magazine to promote the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3, and hinted that the two superhero studios could work together in the future.

“I’m certain that’s more likely now that I’m in charge [at DC]. Who knows?” he said. “That’s many years away, though. I think we have to establish what we’re doing [at DC] first. I would be lying to say that we haven’t discussed it. But all discussions have been very, very light and fun.”

Gunn previously spoke about the potential for a crossover event in 2021, saying that he would “love it to happen” and it wouldn’t be an “impossibility.”

The director, who also helmed The Suicide Squad, recently spoke about the third Guardians film and the series as a whole, reasoning that it offered a good counter-balance to the emotional weight of Avengers: Endgame.

“I really want Marvel to keep making good movies. I think it’s really hard in the wake of the Blip,” he said. “There’s this worldwide, universe-wide event that happened. And in truth, everybody would be stark raving mad at this point.

“It’s hard to write stories in the wake of that, which is why the Guardians movies have been easier - because they’re set outside of that a little bit,” he added.

Gunn has overseen a period of upheaval during his time at DC Studios, with Henry Cavill departing his role as Superman whilst sequels to Wonder Woman: 1984 and Black Adam have reportedly been scrapped.

Whilst some projects have been placed on the backburner, one that is going ahead is Blue Beetle, which released its first trailer earlier this week ahead of its release on August 18.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 1 and Vol 2 and the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special are streaming on Disney+. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 arrives in cinemas on May 5, 2023.
