Jeff Goldblum wants his kids to be financially independent
Jeff Goldblum wants his kids to be financially independent when they grow up.
The 71-year-old 'Jurassic Park' star is dad to two sons - Charlie, eight, and River, six - with his wife Emilie Livingston, 41, and he's declared he wants them to stand on their own two feet when they are older because he hates the idea of them relying on their famous father and his movie earnings.
During an appearance on iHeart’s 'Table for Two with Bruce Bozzi' podcast, Jeff explained: "Hey, you know, you’ve got to row your own boat.
"It’s an important thing to teach kids. I’m not going to do it for you. And you’re not going to want me to do it for you.
"You’ve got to figure out how to find out what’s wanted and needed and where that intersects with your love and passion and what you can do. And even if it doesn’t, you might have to do that anyway."
Jeff didn't become a dad until he was in his 60s, and he previously admitted he's glad he waited until later in life to start a family.
He told the i newspaper in 2018: "I keep doing the math, and keep extrapolating where they’re going to be, and where I’m going to be. And when I buy a watch, I wonder who’s going to get it ...
"I’m glad I waited. It feels great to do it right now, because all the things I’m considering are perfectly suited to the big questions and challenges of having kids, and what you want to expose them to. What you want to leave them with, what life is, and what kind of life you contribute to them."
Jeff also credits his sons with giving his marriage to Emilie a whole new dimension. During an appearance on the 'Today' show in 2002, he explained: "It's amazing, it's revivifying, and makes my relationship with Emilie, frankly, enhanced.
"Seeing [my wife] in this new role is unbelievable. She's heroic beyond imagination ...
"And it's challenging and it's sometimes maddening and very volatile ... They [the kids] can be like feral creatures unleashed. Oh yeah, and sweet and amazing. It's great."
