Jeremy Renner addresses Mission: Impossible 8 return

Jeremy Renner has addressed the possibility of returning to the Mission: Impossible franchise.

The Marvel star appeared in two instalments in the action franchise – 2011's Ghost Protocol and 2015's Rogue Nation – as William Brandt.

Speaking about his decision not to come back for subsequent movies, Renner told Collider that while he enjoyed his time on the series, his family commitments took priority.

"Yeah. I had to leave that. I was supposed to do more with them. I love those guys. I love Tom [Cruise] so much. We had so much fun, and I love that character a lot," he said.

"It requires a lot of time away. It's all in London. I had to go be a dad. It just wasn't gonna work out then."

However, he did tease the possibility of returning, adding: "Maybe now that my daughter is older that could happen. I'd always jump into a Mission: Impossible anytime and back into Brandt. It’s great."

The next instalment in the franchise is the upcoming eighth Mission Impossible movie, which star Hannah Waddingham recently confirmed will begin shooting very soon.

While it has been touted as the final movie in the series, director Christopher McQuarrie admitted last year that more movies could happen – potentially opening the door for Renner's return.

"Look, we're still shooting [the eighth film] and there's any number of ways that that story could play out," he told Entertainment Weekly.

"When you're watching Mission: Impossible, and watching the team go through these adventures, you're having some sense of what it's like to make a Mission: Impossible movie.

"There's always a plan, the plan always changes, everything goes completely awry, and hopefully everything always turns out alright in the end. But you never really fully understand, or trust where it is you're going, until you get there."

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning is now available to rent or purchase. An untitled eighth Mission: Impossible film will be releasing on May 23, 2025.
