Jesse Plemons Does 'Not Really' Think He Bears a Resemblance to Matt Damon: 'It Has Been Haunting Me'

The 'Kinds of Kindness' actor said he does not see the resemblance between him and Matt Damon after a hilarious mix-up on 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!'

Jesse Plemons was hilariously held back by Jimmy Kimmel's sidekick, Guillermo Rodriguez, before his appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on June 11.

The Kinds of Kindness actor, 36, was locked up by Rodriguez after he mistook Plemons for Matt Damon, who is famously banned from Kimmel’s show amid their ongoing feud.

After Rodriguez gave Plemons the “Matt Damon test” to confirm his identity, he was released and allowed to join Kimmel, 56, for his interview. While the former Breaking Bad actor does “not really” see the resemblance himself, he said, “It has been haunting me for a little while.”

“When I was younger my aunt watched Good Will Hunting and for some reason, she told my mom ‘This is what Jesse's going to look like when he gets old.’ " he told Kimmel.

Plemons recalled “an occasion at the Toronto Film Festival maybe 10 years ago or so where I was stepping into an elevator” and he was mistaken for The Bourne Identity actor. “This woman asked me ‘Are you Matt Damon’ I said ‘No I'm sorry I'm not.’ [Then] she looked at me as if ‘Wow, Matt Damon is a liar’ and I felt bad.”

Kimmel then joked that he and Plemons “could do a lot of damage together to his reputation” because of his resemblance to Damon. “We get you one of those Dunkin Donut suits and you can run around, kicking old ladies and pushing children out into traffic. All the things [Damon] does regularly," the host quipped.

Plemons also played a small role in the 2000 film All the Pretty Horses, where he was supposed to play the younger version of Damon’s character, joking that the star may have been the reason his scene was cut from the film.

“By the time the movie premiered, my mom called their local theater and got them to do a special screening for us and I invited this girl that I had a crush on,” Plemons explained. “I was supposed to be in the very first scene of the movie and we sit down and I'm not there. So we kept thinking ‘Oh well you know it could have changed it in the edit’ and we sat through the whole thing and I never showed up.”

Despite his scene being cut, he told Kimmel, “Even with Matt Damon, it was the most exciting part that I had gotten.”

Plemons, who recently won Best Actor for his role in Kinds of Kindness at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, described director Yorgos Lanthimos as a “crazy genius.”

“He sort of exists in his own universe,” Plemons said. “He’s somewhat like his films, which sounds like it could be a scary thing, but he’s really into creating a troop of actors and he’s just as into finding talented people as he is good people that he wants to work with and spend a lot of time with and all that stuff.”

Plemons stars in Kinds of Kindness alongside Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe, Margaret Qualley, Hong Chau, Joe Alwyn, Mamoudou Athie and Hunter Schaefer.

According to the film’s official synopsis, the film follows “a man without choice who tries to take control of his own life; a policeman who is alarmed that his wife who was missing at sea has returned and seems a different person and a woman determined to find a specific someone with a special ability, who is destined to become a prodigious spiritual leader."

Kinds of Kindness is set to release in theaters June 21.
