JJ Lin wins best Mandarin artist at MAMA Awards 2018; BTS big winners of the night

The 2018 Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA) concluded in Hong Kong on Friday night (14 Dec). The Hong Kong leg of the star-studded event which also had stops in Tokyo and Seoul was hosted by actor Song Joong-Ki.

Headlining the night was worldwide K-pop phenomenon, BTS, who is currently on their third world tour, BTS World Tour: Love Yourself. Winning the Artist of the Year Daesang (Grand Prize), members J-Hope, Jin, V and Jungkook broke into tears while expressing their thanks to ARMY (BTS fans) and fellow bandmates for the love and support the group had received in 2018. This is the third consecutive year that BTS was awarded the Artist of the Year Daesang.

BTS is also the award show’s biggest overall winner, receiving the Album of the Year Daesang for their LOVE YOURSELF TEAR album, as well as the Best Asian Style award, MWAVE Global Choice, and TikTok Best Music Video for their song IDOL, on top of their Artist of the Year Daesang.

Singaporean singer JJ Lin took home the Best Asian Artist: Mandarin while Thai singer Peck Palitchoke won the Best Asian Artist: Thailand award.

Mega-popular girl-group TWICE won the Song of the Year Daesang for their What is Love? release. The nine-member group broke history, being the first artist to be awarded this Daesang for three years in a row. They had previously won with CHEER UP in 2016 and SIGNAL in 2017.

TWICE won the Best Female Group and Best Dance Performance Female Group.

Formed through the survival competition show Produce 101: Season 2, boy-group Wanna One took home the Best Male Group and Best Unit awards.

Invited to the 2018 MAMA in Hong Kong was superstar Janet Jackson, who was presented the Janet Jackson Inspirational Award.

Jackson gave an inspirational speech of her wishes of a better world for females, saying, “I dream of an immediate future where women are no longer controlled, manipulated, or abused.” Talented female soloists, Heize, Chungha, and Sunmi, followed with powerful performances right after Jackson’s speech.
