Joe Jonas Says He Asked for His 'Brothers' Blessings' Before Creating 'Personal' New Solo Album

"We made an album in 2–3 weeks," Joe, who recently announced his new single "Work It Out," revealed on the 'Therapuss' podcast

Joe Jonas' upcoming solo album has Nick and Kevin's stamps of approval.

After announcing his new single "Work It Out" earlier this week, Joe appeared on the July 11 episode of Jake Shane's Therapuss podcast to discuss his forthcoming second solo album and revealed he asked his brothers for permission before making the body of work.

The "Cake by the Ocean" singer recalled linking up with musicians including Alexander 23, Justin Tranter and more for a studio session and creating a song together that ended up becoming the catalyst for the album.

"I was listening to it, and I was like, 'Damn, I really like this song,' and I was starting to feel like, "I don’t know why but I want this song for myself,' not just the [Jonas] Brothers, and I also feel like it’s not DNCE, which is another band I’m in. I was like, 'I don’t know what it’s for, but I know I want to work on something. I feel the pull emotionally to work on music.'"

Before continuing with the project, Joe spoke to Nick and Kevin. "I asked my brothers' blessings," he said. "I was like 'I don’t want to call it solo, but I want to go do something on my own, and I don’t feel like it’s DNCE, and I need to go just express stuff for myself.' And they were like, 'Go for it.' Nick booked a movie, Kevin was going to do another season of Claim to Fame, and so I had the window of time."

Once the musician knew the solo venture was alright with his "Burnin' Up" bandmates, he got to work. "We made an album in 2 – 3 weeks," he said. "I’m just really excited. It’s the most personal music I have ever put out."

Joe then teased what fans can expect from the album, explaining that it'll feature "music that’s all over the place." The father of two added, "There’s some real beautiful ballads, there’s songs about being a dad, there’s songs about love, there’s songs about being better to yourself, kinda everything."

Elsewhere in the Therapuss episode, Joe played a clip of his upcoming single, "Work It Out," which includes the lyrics: "Hello, hello, hello, hello, wake up, tomorrow is now / Get up, get up, get up, get up, what are you whinin' about? / No, nobody's gonna save you now, no, nobody's gonna pull you out / Brush your shoulders, life's gonna work it out."

Outside of the Jonas Brothers, Joe released his first solo album, Fastlife, in 2011. He also achieved a top-10 hit in the United States as a member of the band DNCE with "Cake by the Ocean" in 2015, and the group put out its self-titled debut album the following year as well as two EPs.
