For local actor Joel Choo, his anniversary with his girlfriend (and now wife) will be a double celebration from next year onwards.

The 29-year-old married his longtime girlfriend on 17 Dec - which is also their 11th anniversary, he revealed on the Mediacorp show JustSwipeLah.

Their nuptials took place two days after celebrity couple Nick Teo and Hong Ling tied the knot, and was held at The Fullerton Hotel with about 380 guests in attendance.

Needless to say, it was a star-studded event with celebrities such as Rebecca Lim, Zheng Geping, Kym Ng, Desmond Tan, Aileen Tan, Felicia Chin, Jeffrey Xu, Darren Lim, Evelyn Tan, and of course, Choo’s father Zhu Houren.

Choo also surprised his wife with a song that he wrote for her.

The actor-singer announced his engagement in June and only revealed that the wedding would be held in December. His fiancee’s identity was also intentionally kept under wraps.

How the couple dealt with conflict during wedding planning

However, JustSwipeLah’s host Regene Lim interviewed the happy couple after the tea ceremony, and his wife was identified as Jia Yuan.

At that time, both of them admitted to Lim that they had yet to write their vows.

When asked about how they navigate conflicts during the wedding planning, Choo said Jia Yuan has the final say and she agreed.

“I will wear him down until he gives in,” she said.

She even decided on the colours of the wedding decorations, as she felt that champagne and pink colours would fit better with the yellowish colour tone of the venue. Choo, on the other hand, wanted darker and more unusual colours.

Jia Yuan laughed and added, “He didn’t want it and I just ordered it (the decorations) against his will. And when the things arrive, he has no choice right?”

Veteran actor Zhu told Lim that he feels relieved watching Choo all grown up and getting married.

“He can take care of his wife, take care of his family already. He still has a long way to go,” said Zhu.

Newlyweds Teo and Hong Ling also echoed similar sentiments as the latter said, “Actually, the most important thing is not today’s wedding. It’s how they are going to walk this path together for the next 30, 40, or 50 years.”
