John Caldwell: Man arrested over attempted murder of senior Northern Ireland police detective

A 44-year-old man has been arrested by police investigating the attempted murder of a senior detective in Northern Ireland.

Detective Chief Inspector John Caldwell was shot several times at a sports complex in Omagh, Co Tyrone, on 22 February last year, where he had been coaching a youth football team.

He was putting balls in a car when he was attacked in front of his young son and other children, who were seen running for cover.

On Thursday, the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) said they arrested a man in the Dungannon area under the Terrorism Act.

He has been taken to Musgrave Serious Crime Suite in Belfast for questioning.

A PSNI spokesperson said a property was also searched and a number of items have been taken away for further examination.

A number of people have previously appeared in court charged in connection with Mr Caldwell's attempted murder and on charges around the claim of responsibility.

Mr Caldwell, who had investigated a number of high-profile murder cases, spent several weeks in intensive care following the shooting.

He suffered "life-changing" injuries in the attack.

The officer made his first public appearance since the shooting in May - when he attended a garden party in Co Down with the King and Queen.
