John Wick: Chapter 4 sets new record for the series

John Wick: Chapter 4 hasn't had a wide cinema release yet but has already managed to set a new record for the action franchise.

The fourth, considerably longer chapter in the saga of Keanu Reeves' famed assassin is the highest-rated in the entire series. With a 93% critic score on movie review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes at the time of writing, Chad Stahelski's latest is certified fresh.

All three previous films were able to pull the same feat thanks to high critic scores (86% for John Wick and 89% for Chapter 2 and Chapter 3 — Parabellum), though number four is the first John Wick film to go over the 90% mark.

Written by Shay Hatten and Michael Finch, Chapter 4 promises to see through John's vendetta against the High Table in a new adventure set in Japan and Europe.

Going into hiding with the help of the Bowery King (Reeves's co-star in The Matrix Laurence Fishburne), not-so-retired hitman John is ready to take out new baddie, Marquis Vincent de Gramont (Bill Skarsgård).

The franchise's spectacular action sequences are taken onto the next level in this chapter as Wick fends off assassins coming at him from all sides in the streets of Paris as well as in Osaka.

Alongside Reeves and Fishburne, Chapter 4 sees late star Lance Reddick reprise the role of concierge Charon in one of his final film roles, with Ian McShane also returning as New York Continental manager Winston Scott.

Wick newcomer Skarsgård is joined by fresh additions to the franchise, including martial artist Donnie Yen as assassin Caine, singer Rina Sawayama as Osaka Continental concierge Akira and Game of Thrones' Natalia Tena as Katia, John's adoptive sister.

John Wick: Chapter Four opens in cinemas on March 24. The previous John Wick movies are available to buy or rent on Prime Video, plus DVD, Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD.
