Jon Cryer says Andrew McCarthy was a 'd---' when they starred in “Pretty in Pink” together

"We were just too young to understand each other," Cryer clarified on X.

Jon Cryer still believes that Andrew McCarthy was a "d---" during their Brat Pack era — even if Demi Moore disagrees.

Joined by Ally Sheedy, the trio reunited at the Tribeca Film Festival to mark the premiere of McCarthy’s Brats, a documentary about the group of young actors once branded the Brat Pack of Hollywood by a 1985 New York Magazine article. During the Q&A session attended by PEOPLE, Cryer didn’t hesitate to acknowledge his tense relationship with McCarthy when they first crossed paths on a film set.

“When we made Pretty in Pink, we didn’t get along because he was a d---,” Cryer told the crowd.

To his credit, McCarthy didn’t disagree: "That’s very true,” he confirmed.

Fellow Brat Pack alum Moore — who wasn’t in the film but starred opposite McCarthy in St. Elmo’s Fire — offered the sole dissenting opinion.

"Well I didn’t think he was a d---," Moore said, to which Cryer swiftly replied: "Well he wasn’t a d--- to you."

To avoid any confusion, Cryer later expanded on his remarks in a Saturday X post, noting that McCarthy “was sitting two feet away when I said this,” and dismissing the idea that any hard feelings remain.

“For the record, the man is a prince,” Cryer wrote. “We were just too young to understand each other.”

During their onstage conversation, McCarthy confirmed that he later apologized to his former co-star when they crossed paths years later, backstage at The View.

Though brief, the 2012 interaction was meaningful for them both. "It was lovely because it was like within a moment, it was just so clear that we were teenagers and that does not, that in no way defines who we are now," Cryer said of the encounter. "It was just so lovely. It was immediately warm."

Cryer previously addressed their rocky relationship (and eventual reconciliation) during a February visit to The View. He told the ladies that the backstage encounter marked a turning point in their relationship — and a major moment of self-reflection.

"What I realize now, he wrote a terrific memoir called Brat, he was already struggling with alcoholism back when we were shooting that movie,” Cryer said. “I'd projected all this stuff on him at the time, I thought ‘He's this sullen guy that doesn't want to talk to me.’”

He explained, "I found out later he was going through some tough stuff. That was such a lesson for me, it's all about projection. You never know."

Brats premieres June 13 on Hulu.
