Jonathan Majors to receive Perseverance Award following highly publicized assault conviction

The actor will be honored at the fourth annual Hollywood Unlocked Impact Awards, alongside Cardi B and Fat Joe.

Former Marvel star Jonathan Majors will be honored at the fourth annual Hollywood Unlocked Impact Awards, months after being convicted in a domestic violence trial.

During the June 21 event, the embattled 34-year-old actor will be presented with the Perseverance Award which, per the organization, is "given to an individual who has shown that no matter what adversity they face, they will continue to aspire to inspire."

The announcement comes after the Creed III and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania star was found guilty on one count of assault and one count of harassment in December 2023, following a dispute with his then-girlfriend, Grace Jabbari.

Majors did not face prison time for the conviction, but a Manhattan criminal court judge ruled in April that the actor must complete a 52-week in-person batterer’s intervention program. He was also ordered to continue his mental health therapy.

The awards show, founded by Hollywood Unlocked CEO Jason Lee, claims to celebrate accomplishments and contributions for the Black community across music, film, media, politics, and additional creative industries. In addition to Majors, the event will recognize designer Christian Louboutin with the Innovator Award, legendary rapper Fat Joe with the Culture Award, and Cardi B with the Inspiration Award. Tiffany Haddish will host the Los Angeles show, held at the Beverly Hilton.

Majors was arrested in March 2023 on strangulation, assault, and harassment charges in connection to his altercation with Jabbari, who claimed that he had twisted her arm, struck her face, and shoved her into a car during the dispute. She received medical treatment for "minor injuries to her head and neck" at a nearby hospital and was granted a full temporary protection order against him the following month.

Majors filed his own domestic violence complaint against Jabbari that June, claiming that she had assaulted him. Jabbari was arrested on misdemeanor charges of assault and criminal mischief, but the Manhattan District Attorney's Office declined to prosecute the case against Jabbari, citing a lack of prosecutorial merit.

Following his conviction, Jabbari filed a civil suit against Majors accusing him of assault, battery, defamation, and infliction of emotional distress. An attorney for Majors told the Associated Press that Majors was "preparing counterclaims against Ms. Jabbari."

At the time of his arrest, Majors was a rising star in Hollywood, and expected to portray the major antagonist of the next phase in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In the wake of his legal troubles, however, the actor was dropped by his talent manager and publicist, and he parted ways with several high-profile projects, including the forthcoming Dennis Rodman biopic 48 Hours in Vegas and all future MCU films. His film Magazine Dreams, which garnered rave reviews and early awards buzz, was also pulled from the Searchlight release calendar.
