Jonathan Pryce 'got a little choked' shooting last scene on “The Crown”

British actor plays Prince Philip on Netflix's royal drama.

What did The Crown star Jonathan Pryce think when he read showrunner Peter Morgan's scripts for the sixth and final season of Netflix's royal drama series?

"Like a lot of actors, you go through it very quickly saying, 'Which bits am I in?'" says Pryce, who plays Prince Philip on the show, with a chuckle. "But I wanted to know how Peter Morgan dealt with Diana's death, and I think he's done an extraordinary job of telling you just enough."

In Part 2 of the season, which has just premiered, Philip acts as an advisor to Diana's oldest son, the young, and grieving, Prince William, played by newcomer Ed McVey. The actor says he "was heartened to see that Philip became a mentor to William, and to a certain extent to Harry, but especially to William. I think that's how I’d seen his role in the family, he was the guiding figure, he was the person who gave advice. After Philip died, there were lots of interviews with his grandchildren, especially, and his grandchildren saw him as this wonderfully warm, wise figure."

Pryce's Philip is one of the very last people we saw onscreen at the end of the show. The actor reveals that wrapping his role on The Crown was an emotional experience.

"The final day was filming in a vast cathedral," he says. "It was an extraordinary place to be in for the final scene of the series, where you see just see Philip and the Queen, and they had been talking about their legacy, and we were also thinking at the time, this is the last of The Crown, and what that legacy would be like, and saying Philip’s final words. I got a little choked, as I walk away from the Queen. But it was a good feeling, because I felt it was a job well done. You could leave with your head held high."

In addition to The Crown, Pryce has a recurring role on the Apple TV+ spy show Slow Horses and, when EW spoke with the actor, was about to start filming the sequel to the historical drama Wolf Hall, which is titled Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light.

"I reprise the role of Wolsey. Now dead. Interesting," he says. "And then, come March, for Netflix is The Three-Body-Problem, a big new science fiction series. So, I’m sorry, you’re stuck with me a little while yet."

All six seasons of The Crown are now streaming on Netflix.
