Josh Gad Shares Script for “Twins ”Sequel He Wrote for Arnold Schwarzenegger, Danny DeVito and Eddie Murphy

"It was such a blast developing a follow up to one of my favorite comedies of the 80’s," Gad wrote of the script

Josh Gad is giving Twins fans a sneak peek at what could have been.

On Monday, the Frozen actor posted several pages of a script he wrote for a sequel to the classic 1988 comedy starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito, noting that the recent State Farm Super Bowl commercial reuniting the actors inspired him to share.

"Years ago, the late/great Ivan Reitman hired me and my then writing partner @dixonofnoho to write a sequel to Twins called Triplets meant to star Arnold, Danny and Eddie Murphy," Gad, 42, wrote in his caption. "It was such a blast developing a follow up to one of my favorite comedies of the 80’s."

"Unfortunately, the movie never got made but the memories of working on it remain beyond wonderful. Here now, to celebrate their reunion, is the insane prologue to that would-be movie: Triplets," he added.

While Triplets never came to fruition, Schwarzenegger, 76, and DeVito, 79, did have a hilarious reunion in their recent commercial, which saw the action star-turned-politician tripping over the company's slogan due to his Austrian accent.

"Like a good neighbaaa, State Farm is there," Schwarzenegger says throughout the video, which shows him filming a commercial for the insurance giant.

And when he can't quite nail it, DeVito steps in: "Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there."

"You are a backstabbaaa," Schwarzenegger tells his former costar, who corrects him once again: "I am a backstabber."

Twins is a buddy comedy that centers on Schwarzenegger and DeVito as genetically engineered fraternal twins separated at birth. The movie grossed $111 million at the domestic box office upon its release and was the fifth highest-grossing film of 1988, per Box Office Mojo.

Ivan was set to return for the sequel, which would involve the brothers discovering they are triplets, but died in February 2022 at age 75. And while Murphy, 62, was reportedly in talks for the film, Tracy Morgan was more recently reportedly set to take the new part.

"Arnold and I want to work together,” DeVito said last fall during an interview with GQ about his starring role in Broadway's I Need That, joking in addition, “We missed Twins 2, because he became governor — which, he should have done Twins 2 instead of becoming governor."

As for Schwarzenegger, he told The Hollywood Reporter last May that Ivan's son, Jason Reitman, "literally stopped the project when his father died."

"His father wanted to do it really badly. I wanted to do it really badly. Danny DeVito wanted to do it really badly. We had the financing. When his father passed away, Jason says, 'I never liked the idea' and put a hold on it," Schwarzenegger added.
