Julia Fox says she'd 'still love to' play Debi Mazar in Madonna's delayed biopic

Fox commented on the news publicly for the first time after EW previously exclusively revealed that she met with Madonna about portraying Mazar in the movie.

Two years after Entertainment Weekly exclusively revealed that Julia Fox would star as Debi Mazar in Madonna's long-gestating, self-directed (and ultimately delayed) biopic, the actress has expressed interest in returning to the project if the pop icon chooses to make it after the conclusion of her recent Celebration world tour.

“I mean, I’d still love to but I genuinely don’t know,” Fox said in a recent interview with IndieWire, further revealing that she was cast as Mazar — Madonna's longtime friend — in sequences that involving "going back, you know, when they’re like 19 and they first meet."

Fox added that she "might have already aged out of that casting," but remains optimistic and honored about the thought of playing "New York royalty" like Mazar.

“I know it was gonna be either tour or movie and then she went on tour,” Fox said of learning that the film, set to be released via Universal, would be temporarily shelved so Madonna could travel the globe on the Celebration tour. “So, I don’t know when the movie will be picking back up again or when they’re going to start working on it again. But, I didn’t hear anything. I actually don’t know."

Representatives for Madonna did not immediately respond to EW's request for comment.

After EW broke the news in 2022 that Fox met with Madonna about portraying Mazar in the project, Mazar shared her excitement on Instagram.

"I find it all quite amusing, but what I find most interesting is that someone will be playing ME!" she wrote in a post on the site, alongside images of herself and Madonna from years past. "It's surreal! I have NO idea how the script reads or who Madonna has in mind. We have been friends for so dam [sic] long, I'm curious! It sure has been a journey."

The film, which Madonna initially worked on with Oscar-winning Juno screenwriter Diablo Cody, was set to star Julia Garner and follow the music legend's early years in New York City, through to her career as a budding icon, including portions about the development of her single "Vogue."

Madonna previously said that the biopic would chronicle her "struggle as an artist trying to survive in a man's world as a woman, and really just the journey."

Though the pair didn't work together on the film, Madonna brought Garner on stage with her during the "Vogue" portion of the Celebration tour in December.

The tour concluded in May in Brazil, where Madonna courted the biggest audience of her career when 1.6 million people attended her free performance on the beach in Rio de Janeiro.
