Jurgen Klopp sends message to Nottingham Forest fans over Darwin Nunez chant in dramatic Liverpool win
Jurgen Klopp told Nottingham Forest fans they made a mistake in trying to annoy Darwin Nunez, as the striker earned Liverpool a last-gasp win.
The Reds were seemingly going to drop two points in the title race at the City Ground, with it still goalless as the match ticked into the 99th minute and the final few seconds.
But Nunez, off the bench on his return from injury, had the final say, flicking a header beyond Matz Sels from Alexis Mac Allister’s cross to spark bedlam in the away end.
It came after Forest fans had aimed “s*** Andy Carroll” chants at Nunez during his half an hour on the pitch.
"I would not sing a song like that,” Klopp said when asked about that after the match.
“I would not try to wind Darwin up."
The win leaves Liverpool four points clear at the top of the Premier League, before Manchester City take on Manchester United on Sunday and Arsenal then travel to face Sheffield United a day later. Klopp’s side host City in a pivotal clash next weekend.
They will go into that full of confidence and still competing on four fronts, having won the Carabao Cup and progressed in the FA Cup over the last week while also keeping their Premier League title bid on track, despite a lengthy injury list.
Klopp praised the character of his side to rise to the challenge over the last couple of weeks, as he hailed Mac Allister’s role in the winning goal against Forest.
"The goal was set up by a guy who was the calmest on the whole pitch,” Klopp said.
“I saw it only live but I'll never forget it. He was calm. He chips the ball there. Super assist and super important goal.
"If you'd told me 12 days ago we would win all four games I would have said no chance, it was impossible. In the circumstances winning the games is ridiculous.”
