Jury Duty for Emmanuèle Petry, José Miguel Ribeiro, Marcela Rincón, Wesley Louis and Zane Valeniece at the 2024 Quirino Animation Awards

Spain’s 7th Ibero-American Quirino Animation Awards has found its jury for next year, to be held over May 9-11.

The jury is led by animation directors José Miguel Ribeiro from Portugal, Colombian Marcela Rincón and Wesley Louis (U.K.) alongside Zane Valeniece, director of acquisitions at Latvian public television (LTV) and Emmanuèle Petry, head of international sales at Dandelooo, France.

Meanwhile, Bea Bartolomé and José Luis Farias, director and executive producer of the Quirino Awards respectively, will be present at Ventana Sur to help announce the Ibermedia Next winners on Nov. 29

An initiative of regional fund Ibermedia, in which the Quirino Awards has been collaborating for several years, Ibermedia Next is a funding scheme aimed at backing innovation and new technological tools in animation and/or open source tools.

Juror Ribeiro is best known for his debut feature film ” “Nayola,” which collected 18 international awards, including best feature film at the 2022 Quirino Awards, which also marked the centenary of Portuguese animation.

Colombian screenwriter and director Rincón’s credits include her feature debut, “El libro de Lila,” produced by her own company, Fosfenos Media, from which she also directed six seasons of the animated series “Guillermina y Candelario.”

Louis is a director, designer and animator, as well as the founder and director of The Line Animation, a London-based studio specializing in 2D animation that has produced such works as “True Damage – Giants,” “Super Turbo Atomic Ninja Rabbit” and “The Mighty Grand Piton,” among others.

Director of acquisitions at Latvian public television (LTV), Valeniece is keen about narrative in the field of animation and the role of public television in the media landscape.

Petry is the co-founder, producer, and head of international sales at the French production and distribution company Dandelooo. She has won two Emmy Awards for the series “Rolie Polie Olie” (Nelvana Europe) and “The Treehouse Stories” (Dandelooo).

The Quirino Awards will also participate in various activities organized by Ventana Sur’s Animation! where they will award two prizes during the Pitching Sessions.

An annual event, the Quirinos are held in the city of San Cristóbal de La Laguna, Tenerife, Canary Islands where generous incentives, 45-50% in rebates, a 4 % corporation tax and an explosion of animation houses and build in local talent has made the Canary Islands a prime site for location shoots and for the establishment of production outposts or relocation of entire companies.
