Kampachi @ The Troika, Kuala Lumpur

Reopened in The Troika in end 2012, Kampachi – that famed Japanese restaurant from Equatorial Hotel Kuala Lumpur has delighted its many steadfast fans with its offerings of no-fuss traditional dishes. Occupying the ground and mezzanine floors of The Troika, its magnificent high ceilings and windows lend a touch of breath-taking spaciousness to the chic restaurant. While they serve a la carte dishes and more elaborate omakase meals here, their lunch set offerings have been quite a hit with busy executives around the Golden Triangle area.

Salad & Kampachi's signature Truffle Sauce for teppanyaki

From their huge hard-cover menu, several types of set lunches are listed. The regular Lunch Sets are priced from RM45 upwards. Each set comes with rice, miso soup, pickles and dessert. If rice is not your cup of tea, they do have the soba and udon sets as well, like their Soba/Udon & Shake Sashimi Set (RM60) – noodles with raw salmon and California roll. There’s also a bento set - Makunouchi Bento (RM60) – a lacquered box of raw fish, deep-fried prawn and grilled chicken teriyaki.

Pan-fried Sliced Beef with Ginger Sauce

Then, there’s the Otanoshimi Lunch (RM62) which includes kobachi (appetizer), chawan mushi, rice, miso soup, pickles and dessert. You get to choose 2 items from these: sashimi, gyuniku or tori teriyaki (beef or chicken); saba or shake (mackerel or salmon) shioyaki or teriyaki style; tempura, deepfried oysters/scallops/ prawns coated in breadcrumbs (2 pieces), beef/chicken cutlet and stir-fried assorted vegetables and mushrooms.

I opted for the Sashimi Deluxe (additional RM28 for 3 types of sashimi) and Pan-fried Sliced Beef with Ginger Sauce. The sashimi plate came with decent-sized thick slices of tuna, squid and octopus – very fresh and sweet. I could do with a couple more slices, actually. The sliced beef sauted with ginger sauce was not memorable – it tasted more Chinese than Japanese but it’s good to go with the rice. Their chawan mushi is excellent with its perfectly smooth texture.

I like their teriyaki beef too as I tried a few bites from LL’s order. The cubes of beef were juicy and tender, in accordance to our request for “medium rare”.

Teppanyaki Tenderloin

From the Teppanyaki Sets which are served with appetizer, salad, rice, miso soup, pickles and dessert, DL had the Seafood & Beef set. Priced at RM73, there were tenderloin, mackerel, scallops, and tiger prawn which is quite a substantial mix. Other options are Grilled chicken with fried garlic (RM45), Seafood – combo of tiger prawn, salmon, scallop & cuttlefish (RM65) or just a juicy sirloin steak (RM63).

If you are a rice lover, then just go for their Donburi Sets, which also comes with miso soup, pickles and dessert. Ranging from RM38 to RM75, choices range from Oyako Don (RM38) – chicken, egg and onions to Tekka Don (RM75) – raw tuna over vinegared rice.

The “dessert” served with the sets is just a small bowl of fresh fruits. Fancier desserts can be ordered separately. Check out their Tempura Ice Cream (RM20) – deep fried vanilla ice cream or their Pancake Ice Cream (RM22) – teppanyaki pan-fried ice cream enclosed in a crepe.
