Karen Mok slams dog meat festival

19 Jun - Singer-actress Karen Mok joins the many celebrities who protest against the Yulin Dog Meat Festival, kicking off this weekend in the mainland prefecture.

The festival, which takes place annually on 21 and 22 June, is in fact the city's summer solstice festival, where traditionally some 10,000 dogs, and now cats, are slaughtered for consumption.

Speaking to the media at a fashion event yesterday, Karen stated that she is in support of social progress, and believes that the festival's unique delicacy is unnecessary.

"We have so many types of food that every day we waste a lot of. Thus, this practice of eating cats and dogs should be eliminated," she said.

She added, "I hope people will not do such a cruel and disturbing thing."

Western stars, including British comedian Ricky Gervais and singer Leona Lewis have already shown support for the campaign against the festival, tweeting about it using the hashtag #StopYuLin2015 to gather more support.
