Kate Hudson is happy with the path her romantic relationships have led her down.

While the actress, 45, appeared on the May 22 episode of the Call Her Daddy podcast to promote her debut album Glorious, she reflected on her first marriage to musician Chris Robinson, whom she described as her "first real love."

"The people [in my life] let people make mistakes. And, by the way — not a mistake," she said, after host Alex Cooper asked whether any family members advised her not to get married at a young age. Hudson said she was 18 when she and Robinson first met. They were married from 2000 to 2007.

"I look back at my entire life at this point and I actually feel like I might have gotten it right, you know? There's this sort of construct that we're supposed to do it a certain way, which I understand because I really believe in the unit, and I think it's what's missing right now," she said.

"But I do believe that a unit can exist differently than this sort of, like, very kind of religious concept of marriage and male-female relationship."

Hudson said she believes people should be able to raise children with friends if their life path sees fit and nodded to her blended family with fiancé Danny Fujikawa.

"For me, having the means and the ability to choose to be more healthy in relationships means that it's easy; it's kind of been easier for me to exit unhealthy relationships," she said.

"Whereas if I probably didn't have the means it would be a much more challenging thing," she added. "But inside of that, just because you're not supposed to be with someone doesn't mean you can't create a big beautiful experience. I don't know how I've been able to do it, but we just do it, all of us."
