Kate Middleton Makes Royal Return to Trooping the Colour in a Black and White Jenny Packham Dress
It's Trooping the Colour, and while the annual parade is designed to mark the public birthday celebration of the monarch, all eyes are on a different royal today. That's because Kate Middleton is making her first major appearance since she announced that she was undergoing cancer treatment back in March.
The Princess of Wales, who is riding in a carriage with her three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, looked lovely in a black and white Jenny Packham dress and hat by Philip Treacy. She also wore the Irish Guards Regimental Brooch in her role as Colonel of the Irish Guards, and accessorized with Cassandra Goad pearl earrings that she first wore at Prince Louis's christening.
While Kensington Palace has been careful to point out that Kate's attendance today should not be seen as a return to royal duties, it does seem to indicate a hopeful turn of events for the princess, who has been undergoing chemotherapy treatment.
The news that Kate would take part in today's parade was part of a surprise announcement yesterday, which was accompanied by a personal letter from Kate to the public along with a new photo of the Princess. While she admitted that she has, “good days and bad days,” she also said that she was, "looking forward to attending The King’s Birthday Parade this weekend with my family and hope to join a few public engagements over the summer."
Though as Colonel of the Irish Guards, Kate would typically have a formal role in Trooping the Colour, this year General James Bucknall, who stood in for Kate last week at the Colonel’s Review of the Irish Guards, will take the regiment's salute on her behalf while she watches from the Major General’s Office. It's expected that Kate will appear on the Buckingham Palace balcony with the rest of the royal family to watch the military flypast, however the palace noted ahead of time that these plans are subject to change on short notice.
