Kerry Washington, Rachel Weisz and More Celebrate Women in Film With Chanel and Tribeca at ‘Through Her Lens’ Lunch
The Tribeca Festival has, for the last decade, given Cannes a run for its fashion cred, thanks to Chanel’s partnership. Now in its 10th year, the Through Her Lens: Tribeca Chanel Women’s Filmmaker Program program was celebrated on Friday with the annual lunch.
Guests arrived at Locanda Verde inside the Greenwich Hotel, first posing for photos and then making their way into the hotel’s private courtyard, as spritzes, shrimp cocktail and French fries passed by.

The Chanel-dressed guests included Kerry Washington, Rachel Weisz, Selma Blair, Christy Turlington, Joey King, Ashley Benson, Jenny Slate, Dianna Agron, Katie Holmes, Camila Mendes, Emily Mortimer, Kathryn Newton, Ella Rubin, Louisa Jacobson, Chase Sui-Wonders, West Duchovny, Anna Baryshnikov, Juliana Canfield, Sarah Pidgeon, Francesca Scorsese and more; the lunch was hosted by Jane Rosenthal, Tribeca chief executive officer and cofounder.
“I definitely feel very cool — as in, not hot,” said Benson. “I sweat so much that I’m glad I can have something light.” The new mom had chosen a pair of black leather shorts and a white ruffled tank for the warm day. “I feel very French chic.”
Since having her baby daughter, Benson said her style has definitely paired down.
“There is so much going on so I don’t care as much how I dress,” she said. “But I think when me and my husband do date nights I get to dress up more. I’m definitely wearing more feminine clothing — I’ll try and do a long dress and put on a heel.”
Pidgeon, Tony-nominated for her role in “Stereophonic,” hasn’t gotten a chance to see many of the other Broadway shows this spring, but threw out praise for their neighboring show, “The Outsiders.”
“I’ve heard incredible things. I can hear their music as I’m getting dressed for our show and it’s so powerful,” she said.
The actress, who attended the Met Gala in Christopher John Rogers, said her look for the Tonys is nearly there.
“I’m really excited. I’ve had a fitting and I think we’re just sorting through it, figuring out the vibe.”
Rubin, who starred alongside Anne Hathaway and Nicholas Galitzine this May in “The Idea of You,” was wearing a Chanel version of her go-to white T-shirt and jeans.
“I’ve never been to a Chanel event before,” she said. “I grew up witnessing this event so it’s really exciting to be here.”
King was wearing a Chanel swimsuit as a bodysuit, worn underneath a long leather coat with a coordinating skirt. The actress was just back from the Cannes Film Festival, where she went with L’Oréal.
“Oh my god, it was so fun. It was my first time going, and I was so happily overwhelmed,” she said of the festival. “I’ve never done that carpet before and a couple of my friends who have were like ‘it’s insane but it’s super fun,’ and it was exactly that. My knees were shaking the whole time.”
When asked about recent women-led film projects that inspired her, King quickly rattled off several names.
“There are just so many amazing women-led films and TV right now. That’s the thing, I’m so thrilled about where we are right now,” she said.
Kara Young, who is up for a Tony this year for her role in “Purlie Victorious,” shared her sentiment.
“Celebrating women in film, celebrating femmes in film feels like the necessary thing to do all the time,” she said. “The disparity between women in film versus men in film is still present. If we all get into a room together and celebrate each other and meet each other, I mean they definitely did a number of picking who to be in the room here today…it just feels like a moment.”
