Ky. Mom Accused of Fatally Shooting Her Children, 6 and 9, Who Were Found Dead in Bedroom: ‘Horrific’

A mother is accused of killing her two young children inside a Kentucky home this week, authorities said.

In a press release on Wednesday, the Bullitt County Sheriff’s Office said Tiffanie Lucas was arrested and charged with two counts of murder in connection with the deaths of her children, ages 6 and 9. The victims’ names have not been released publicly.

Authorities responded to a report of a shooting around 11 a.m. Wednesday at a Shepherdsville home, where they found the children with gunshot wounds.

According to an arrest report obtained by local stations WLKY, WAVE and WDRB, a witness told police she went inside the house and discovered the two boys in the bedroom. A gun, believed to be the murder weapon, was found on a bed, per the report.

The children died at a local hospital a short time later. Authorities said the investigation is ongoing and have not released further details about the shooting.

"At this time, it appears all parties in relation to this incident have been accounted for and there is no threat to the community,” the release states.

According to court records cited by WLKY, Lucas was previously convicted of drug possession and spent one month in jail.

"Whether you think it's mental illness, just pure evil, a combination of both, it could be substance abuse, any combination thereof,” Col. Alex Payne, Chief Deputy of the Bullitt County Sheriff’s Office, told the outlet. “Pick your poison. None of it's good. The result is horrific.”

A local resident was left in shock after hearing of the deaths.

“I know people get aggravated, but that is just over the top,” Carol Warren told WDRB. “It is sad."

Lucas, 32, was sent to the Bullitt County Detention Center, where she’s being held on a $2 million bond, WAVE reports. A judge reportedly entered a not-guilty plea on her behalf.

PEOPLE couldn’t immediately identify an attorney who could comment on Lucas’ behalf.
