Langat Fishing Seafood and Beer Garden in Cheras

Tucked away in one godforsaken corner of Hulu Langat, location, location, location isn’t what the owners of Langat Fishing Seafood & Beer Garden had in mind when they opened the restaurant. Originally the plan was to run a fishing pond to lure angling enthusiasts but shrewd business sense led them to open a no-frills restaurant and beer garden onsite, effectively keeping avid anglers fed and watered.


Crowd-pleasing Chinese food in the boondocks

Naturally, such an off-the-beaten-track makan place is worth bragging about so it was only a matter of time before Langat Fishing Seafood restaurant caught the imagination and tastebuds of local foodies. Traversing the obscure, bumpy road going past a light industrial area just adds to the food-hunting fun.

Sited under a basic zinc roofed structure with raw concrete floor, the Chinese tai chow restaurant reels in the working crowd by day and a family-centric crowd by night. Several glass tanks and a sizeable fish pond filled with mountain spring water at the entrance are stocked with live tilapia, patin (catfish), and other river fishes (about RM8 – RM13.50 per 100g), enabling customers to select their preferred catch.

Tables nearest to the patio are much sought-after as they accord diners the scenic vista of two fishing ponds set against a lush canvas of trees and shrubs.

We decided to go along with the day’s specials: steamed river catfish in claypot (RM40 per kg; our dish cost RM48) and steamed wild caught “theen gai” (paddy chicken or East Asian bullfrog at RM110 per kg/our dish costs RM56) with minced ginger and spring onion.

The catfish was noteworthy; its sweet flesh suffused with fragrant Chinese wine whilst the fish jus and light soya sauce formed a salubrious pool at the bottom of the pot, accentuated by the distinct nuances of old ginger, spring onion, and deep-fried shallot.

Our serving of paddy chicken turned out to be a hit-and-miss affair as the generous minced ginger topping resulted in the delicately sweet meat completely smothered by the rhizome’s assertive spiciness.

Other supplementary dishes we had included deep-fried salt and pepper squid (RM15), stir-fried paku ferns with sambal belacan (RM12) and house-made beancurd (RM12). They more than made up for the earlier hiccup as the tasty offerings boasted lush, hearty flavours. Our only grouse was the portions were too skimpy for five hungry adults.

Still, the restaurant’s obscure but green, verdant location makes this restaurant worth visiting should you tire of dining at ho-hum Chinese restaurant in the suburbs.
