Lawmen: Bass Reeves spoilers follow.

Lawmen: Bass Reeves director Damian Marcano has broken down the "unexpected" prisoner scene from episode four.

From Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan, the spin-off stars David Oyelowo as a federal peace officer of the "Indian Territory" in Fort Smith, Arkansas. The titular character was inspired by the real-life Black sheriff who upheld the law in the 1880s and '90s — a time which saw Black people suffer with no rights.

The fourth episode of the series featured a tense scene, with Bass getting attacked by a prisoner after falling asleep. When the officer retaliates, local outlaw Billy (Forrest Goodluck) is forced to intervene.

Marcano spoke exclusively to Digital Spy, explaining why the scene serves as a powerful moment in Bass's character development.

"Who can honestly say the reasons behind a man's actions in his heart, right? That scene was done with Rob Morgan, who played the role of Ramsey (the prisoner), who is an incredible performer as well," he said.

"Things happen out there in these lonely pastures and fields and plains, as they are taking these journeys. Sometimes violence is warranted. Sometimes it was unexpected. Sometimes, I think it was just human beings reacting to what the situation was at the time."

The director went on the describe the journey Bass goes on throughout the season, teasing a turning point in episode 6 which sees the hero reach his limit.

"I don't want to give too much away, but you will eventually see where all of Bass's actions do get to a point in this season where he can't take it anymore. We finally see our hero sort of take a turn," he explained. "At some point, I think we all have our limit. At some point, we all hit our wall and we definitely see him hit a wall this season.

"There's also another theme of our show, in which we've been exploring the weight of the badge. Here is a character who was an enslaved man, he was forced to fight for the side who was enslaving him. Then later on, to be given a badge to be some type of law enforcement – who knows what that might do to the mind of Bass Reeves?"
