League of Legends: Faker and T1 are setting and breaking records this season

Widely considered to be the greatest League of Legends (LoL) player of all time, Lee “Faker” Sang Hyeok continues to cement his place at the top of his game, as he and his team T1 continue setting and breaking records early into the 2022 season.

Largely thanks to Faker, T1 already are the most decorated team in LoL history, being the only team that can boast three World Championships, two of which were won in back-to-back years.

The team also has two Mid-Season Invitational titles and plenty of LoL Championship Korea (LCK) championships under their belts.

T1 had one of the stronger performances at Worlds 2021, but were outlasted by 2020 Worlds Champions DWG KIA 3-2 in the semifinals, a game dubbed as “the finals before the grand finals".

Chinese team EDward Gaming eventually took last year's Summoner’s Cup after an upset win against DAMWON KIA 3-2.

Still, with Faker at the helm, 2022 looks like it's shaping up to be one of the organization’s best years once again.

Despite it being early in the year, the team have already set and broke records in the first two months of the Season. Here are some of the records that Faker and T1 have made so far:

T1 reprises 14-0 win streak

Faker and his team have gone undefeated in the 2022 LCK Spring Split thus far.

After a match against KT Rolster last Sunday (6 March), the LoL superstar and his team matched the winning streak record that he helped set seven years ago in 2015, when the organization was still named SKT.

Faker, along with top laner Choi “Zeus” Woo-je, jungler Moon “Oner” Hyeon-joon, AD carry Lee “Gumayusi” Min-hyeong, and support Ryu “Keria” Min-seok, took their 14th win of the season in the Group Stage tie.

Despite KT Rolster’s valiant efforts to choke T1 out in the jungle, the winningest team of all time still took control of each match, ending in a 2-0 sweep.

Should T1 continue this winning streak, they will break their own record in the coming weeks.

Faker marks his 70th champion played in the LCK; 74th in his entire career

Faker also notably set two records in the previous months.

In a match against DRX in January, Faker locked in Tryndamere, making that the 70th champion that he has used in the LCK, and 74th across his entire career.

Corki has been a main problem in the mid lane since the start of the season, and the LoL G.O.A.T. has proven that the Barbarian King is a perfect counter against the Daring Bombardier’s power.

Counting on Corki’s lack of crowd control, Faker’s Tryndamere was able to push back the Yordle pilot’s ability to affect team fights, clocking in eight kills in the match, including a turret-diving triple kill that set up the game-winning assault for T1.

The team took the series 2-1.

While Faker is well-known for his mastery of Azir, Orianna, and especially LeBlanc, the Korean superstar has also made some somewhat odd selections.

Tryndamere is the fourth champion that Faker has played professionally for one time and won with just that once; the other three are Olaf, Poppy, and Vex.

Faker has also played other champions like Darius, Kayle, Quinn, and Lux once, but they were not picked again after he lost with them.

Faker is the first LoL player to reach 2,500 kills

On Thursday (3 March), Faker smashed another record in the match against Gen.G, this time by notching his 2,500th kill on his trademark Le Blanc pick.

With Keria's exceptional map awareness and playmaking, T1's mid and support pair had a constant presence on the map as Faker went 6/1/6 on the Leblanc in the first game.

Faker is thus far the only pro LoL player to get 2,500 kills throughout his career. The closest player to him in the LCK, DRX's Kim "Deft" Hyuk-kyu, has only managed a little over 2,000.

Faker celebrated his 1,000th game with BBQ Fried Chicken

Faker also reached the 1,000 career games played (of which 700 alone were in the LCK) milestone in February.

T1's midlaner was the second player to reach this record after DRX’s Kim “Deft” Hyuk-kyu, who became the first player to reach 1,000.

Faker decided to celebrate by giving away 400 boxes of BBQ fried chicken to both T1 and DRX fans, and the press who watched the game on 18 February.

In an interview with Inven Global, the LoL G.O.A.T. admitted that “it’s a milestone that also surprises me.” Faker has been playing pro LoL since 2013, with his career running for a total of 7 years and 9 months, making him one of the pro players who has been in LoL esports the longest.

Keria reaches 2,000 career assists

It’s not only Faker who has been setting records this Spring.

Keria, T1's support player, reached 2000 assists in his career last month in a match against Nongshim RedForce.

This is also quite the feat, especially when considering Keria has only been playing for a little over two years.

Keria and Gumayusi also had the highest KDA at Worlds 2021, right before they were defeated by DWG KIA.

With all the records that T1 are setting, this could be the year that Faker and his team take back the Summoner’s Cup, should they continue their stellar performance, of course.
