League of Legends: Soul Fighter finally gives players long-awaited 'real' new content

Soul Fighter isn’t your typical grindy, dating sim, play-the-same-Summoner’s Rift type event, so there's plenty of new stuff for players to enjoy.

There’s a new event across the world of Runeterra, and it’s taken inspiration from the fighting games and anime tournament arcs of our childhood.

Soul Fighter, Riot Game’s tribute to the fighting game genre, is a six-week cross-game event with in-game content coming to League of Legends (LoL), Teamfight Tactics, League of Legends: Wild Rift, and Legends of Runeterra.

The event launches on Thursday, 20 July and will run until Monday, 28 August.

And even better, players are finally getting what they asked for: new content!

Thankfully, this event isn’t your typical grindy, dating sim, play-the-same-Summoner’s Rift type.

Aside from the new skins, players can also finally experience a new game mode, metagame, lore, and more.

This is all exciting news, especially since League’s content has been in limbo for quite some time now. New content is also not exclusive to LoL; in fact, LoL: Wild Rift and Teamfight Tactics are also getting exciting experiences as well.

Here’s everything you can expect during the Soul Fighter event.

This year’s summer event seems to be a make-or-break moment for the LoL community, especially after the backlash Riot received last January for lack of new content, new game modes and environments, and new lore.

Things are looking up, though, because Riot’s most awaited new game mode, “Arena,” is arriving during the Soul Fighter event.

There’s also going to be a new metagame that replaces the story mode nightmare from last year’s Star Guardians.

This is all on top of the global release of the newest Darkin Assassin, Naafiri, the Hound of a Hundred Bites, and 13 new skins.

New Game Mode: Arena

LoL's newest game mode, Arena, features four teams of two players, each engaging in alternating rounds of combat against one another.

There are a lot of reasons why it’s good. To begin with, the odds of winning are stacked against you; at best, you have a 25% shot at glory. And if you keep losing, you probably only have yourself to blame.

The battles are short and straightforward, but involve hazards that make things more chaotic and entertaining.

In addition, there are augments, lending a touch of roguelike gameplay to this mode.

The augments will give each game a variable you cannot predict or calculate as much as your everyday Summoner’s Rift.

Speaking of the Summoner’s Rift, Arena will have more than just one new map, so finally, you won’t see the same green grass, the same baron, the same walls, and the same everything.

New Metagame: Tournament of Souls

We already talked about the boring, grindy dating sims of the 2021-2022 past and this year; Riot is scrapping that.

The new metagame is a fighting game of sorts, which is quite nostalgic of arcade fighting games of the past.

The tournament's goal is to defeat all ten opponent champions and become the tournament's new champion.

After each victory, players can claim rewards and unlock the Story and Expert difficulty levels, each with varying levels of challenge for players of all skill levels and time commitment.

All I can say is that I’m just glad I don’t have to grind more than 45 times to get through all of the game content.

Wild Rift won’t miss out on the Soul Fighter Fun

LoL: Wild Rift isn’t missing out on all the fun too. First up, Nilah, the first truly melee AD Carry is coming to the game during the launch of Soul Fighter.

The game will also have six new Soul Fighter skins, a non-dating sim in-client narrative experience, and a completely new game mode designed exclusively for Wild Rift.

New game mode: Tag Duel

Tag Duel is a new game mode in which players compete against one another in one-on-one combat. Players will be asked to choose three champions before the beginning of the game.

If you experienced the LoL PC tutorial, you were allowed to seamlessly switch between three champions throughout the tutorial. Now imagine that setup but in the context of a 1v1. Just imagine how many cool combos you can pull off by yourself!

New Metagame

Players will be immersed in an original story set in the world of Soul Fighter, told primarily through the eyes of Draven and Yasuo as they compete in the Tournament of Souls and explore the Lands Beyond.

By playing Wild Rift matches, players will progress through a visual novel, including minigame combat that will test their speed and accuracy.

Players who progress through the event will be rewarded with tokens, which can be spent on various items in the event shop and will unlock Arcade Mode. Arcane Mode allows players to play minigames as their favourite Soul Fighter champion, earn an exclusive emote, and more.

Teamfight Tactics will have a bit of new content

Teamfight Tactics just released a new set, but there's still a bit of new content as well.

Players can expect an all-new game mode, an in-game narrative experience, new Tacticians, an Event Pass, and the Tournament of Souls Mythic arena.

New Game Mode: Soul Brawl

Soul Brawl is a limited-time mode coming to Teamfight Tactics for the Soul Fighter event, similar to Fortune's Favour during the Lunar Gala at the beginning of the year.

There are two phases to this game mode: the "Training" phase, in which players compete for Soul Power to improve their Soul Crown and unlock more loot options, and the "Tournament" phase, in which players are eliminated in a "best-of-three" bracket.

Metagame: The Choncc Dome

In the Choncc Dome, Champions and Tacticians team up to prepare for the Tournament of Souls.

The Choncc Dome is the first event to feature an interactive dome and the first time a TFT in-client experience has been ported to mobile platforms, along with an exclusive battle pass.

Legends of Runeterra to release new skins and an Event Pass

Legends of Runeterra’s involvement in Soul Fighter is not as heavy as the other three games, but there will be epic and rare skins for eight champions.

A Soul Fighter Battle Pass and some new emotes and card backs will also be released.

Soul Fighter Charity: Riot Games Social Impact Fund

Like in previous years, Riot Games will donate 20% of proceeds from Soul Fighter Samira (LoL), the Soul Fighter Event Pass, and all related bundle sales to the Riot Games Social Impact Fund.
