League of Legends: Udyr gets a hotfix to address dismal win rates despite rework

Udyr's rework, one of the most anticipated and extensive overhauls of a League of Legends (LoL) champion in recent years, was released in Patch 12.16 last week.

While Udyr’s preview video have hyped so many, showing promise that this was the best rework to ever arrive, his release was entirely different.

His Visual Graphic Update (VGU) did not disappoint, but the devs have missed the mark on his gameplay.

Udyr's win rates are at a dismal 43.23% in the jungle, and naturally, this hasn’t moved him out of Tier 5.

Udyr mains expressed that the versatility of the champion wasn’t executed well, with his damage-oriented builds failing much more than tankier ones.

It appears that some bugfixes are due as well. The item Tear of the Goddess has not been stacking properly on Udyr, which means that his passive-empowered auto-attacks aren’t coming through.

However, this is only true once the targeted spell Wingborne Storm (R) has been successfully performed, so this might have been intentional.

As a result, developer Riot Games has released a hotfix to buff the Spirit Walker.

Riot’s Ray “RayYonggi” Williams, who was responsible for of Sivir’s extremely successful rework, actively engaged players on the Udyr mains Discord channel, taking in feedback from players who’ve mastered Spirit Walker.

He then gave a couple of updates on the newly reworked champion on the same channel, saying, "Udyr is currently performing about as expected with Tank builds and weak compared to expectations with AD/Q builds (and significantly weaker than what is acceptable long term)."

He also mentioned that some skills were slightly overtuned while others slightly undertuned, with the Spirit Walker’s Q "significantly underperforming".

RayYonggi warned that this won’t be completely solved in one go, but the team aimed to address these slowly.

Here are some of the Micropatch changes are as follows, courtesy of a Reddit post by user HS_Cogito_Ergo_Sum:

Wilding Claw (Q)

  • Max HP on hit 3~9% >> 3~10%

  • Max HP on hit AD ratio 4% >> 6%

  • Physical on hit damage 5~25 (+0.1 bonus AD)>> 5~45 (+0.2 bonus AD)

His Q now scales with AD. This will hopefully allow Udyr’s AD build to be much more feasible.

Iron Mantle (W)

  • Shield HP ratio 2~5% >> 2~4%

  • Life on hit HP ratio 1.2~1.8% >> 1.2~1.5%

His W gets a nerf as an adjustment, as a precaution to avoid Udyr tanks from overrunning the Summoner’s Rift.

Blazing Stampede (E)

  • Move speed 30~50% >> 30~65%

  • Stun lockout per target 6~4.5s >> 6~4 s

Udyr's Blazing Stampede (E) now grants him 65% increased movement speed, up from 50%, and the Stun lockout will help him execute better crowd control.

For now, the hotfix has done little to improve our Spirit Walker’s overall win rate, but RayYonggi implied on Discord that this won’t be the last adjustments to the champion.

Hopefully, Riot follows through and brings out the best in this old champion.

Otherwise, all the hype on this rework will be all for nothing, and players will be left wanting.
