Ditto enables customers to create a video of their face from phone, webcam or in-store kiosk to virtually try-on glasses, get a face analysis and personal frame recommendations

India’s online Lenskart has invested US$1 million in San Francisco-based startup Ditto, which develops 3D face model for the eye-wear e-tailer’s virtual trial service, in return for a minority equity.

Lenskart already employs Ditto’s 3D try-on services on its website and app. The integration will help the company enhance its online engagement with consumers, wherein they can share different pictures of themselves trying various eye glasses, with their friends and relatives on social media.

Commenting on the announcement, Peyush Bansal, Founder and CEO of Lenskart.com, said: “Ditto provides us with the patented 3D virtual try-on technology that allows customers to see themselves in eyewear in 180° angles with realism. So far, the response to this service is commendable with over 10,000 trials everyday.”

Ditto is a venture-backed technology company, which licenses software to eyewear retailers globally. It enables customers to create a video of their face from phone, webcam or in-store kiosk to virtually try-on glasses, get a face analysis and personal frame recommendations

The firm’s 3D Try On service records the users face from multiple angles letting it map the face – and then when the users try on a frame, they can swipe on the image to turn the head to the left and right as well, to get a view of the glasses from different angles. This online trial provides preferences and historical data to make frame selection faster, more effective and fun for the buyers. Lenskart.com has been using the services since 2016.

Founded in 2010, Lenskart is a leading online retailer of premium quality and stylish eyewear, offering over 10,000 different styles to suit all pocket sizes and diverse consumer needs. It also offers services like Free Home Eye check-up and Free Home Trial.

With a network strength of more than 900, Lenskart is present in over 350 stores across more than 95 cities in India.

In May last year, Lenskart secured US$60 million in Series D round of funding led by IFC, a member of the World Bank Group, which invested US$17 million. Lenskart’s other backers are IDG Ventures (US$4 million in October 2011) and Ronnie Screwvala-led Unilazer Ventures (US$10 million in February 2013), TPG Growth & TR Capital (US$22 million in January 2015), and Premji Invest (in September 2016).
