LG updates its L Series: minimal design with maximum features

LG's revamped mid-range smartphones could create a stir at this month's Mobile World Congress thanks to their excellent blend of features and affordability.

This is the third time that LG has revamped its L Series range and this time it has clearly been influenced by both Apple and Motorola. Apple because the design is simple yet, thanks to the choice of a blend of metal and plastic finishes, doesn't feel cheap. And Motorola because the hardware specifications and operating system are not what you'd expect from a range of phones not trying to eke out a niche in the premium market.

Whether a consumer chooses the smallest, 3.5-inch display model or the biggest, 4.7-inch qHD display model, they'll be getting the latest version of Android (4.4 KitKat) and a removable battery, plus the option of a specially made ‘Quick Window' protective case that wards off accidental bumps and scratches but still enables the user to see who's calling without having to lift the case's flap.

The inclusion of the latest version of Android is quite a big deal. Very few handsets currently have it installed and the fact that these mid-range phones have it means that they'll stay relevant and up to date for longer. Consumers can buy one safe in the knowledge that they won't be obsolete in a few months, or even a few years.

As well as a 4.7-inch HD display, the L90 gets a quad-core processor, 1GB of RAM, an 8-megapixel rear facing camera and 8GB of internal storage. The next phone down, the L70 gets a smaller, lower resolution 4.5-inch display, a dual-core processor, a 5-megapixel rear-facing camera and 4GB of on-board storage. And finally, the baby L40 gets a 3.5-inch display (the same size as an iPhone 4S), a 3-megapixel rear-facing camera and 512MB of RAM but still boasts the same dual-core processor found in the L70.

However, the biggest selling point will be their price and although they are expected to be very competitively priced, LG is keeping quiet until February 24, the first day of the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
