Liam Payne's awkward Oscar's interview turns into viral Celtic song

Singer Liam Payne’s reaction to the infamous Oscars slap has turned into a pretty chill Celtic folk song. Some might even say the song … “slaps.”

In case you missed it, Will Smith slapped comedian Chris Rock onstage at the Oscars after Rock made an improvised and insensitive joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s alopecia. Of course, celebrities were just as split about the situation as the public. Payne was no exception when he spoke with Good Morning Britain following the incident.

Watch this Brooklyn bedroom go from drab to fabulous in one day:

“Will Smith actually used to live behind my house. I’ve had the pleasure of knowing his son and his daughter very well,” Payne told Good Morning Britain. “We did Men In Black III with him. I believe whatever he felt that he did, he had the right to do. I also felt there were three losers in one fight. He didn’t know, being Chris Rock; he didn’t want to do what he had to do, being Will Smith; and she did nothing, being Jada.”

Payne’s response went viral on Twitter, with over 9.4 million views and many people reacting to the British pop star’s accent changes. Many felt like he sounded Dutch, Welsh, Italian, English and American throughout the interview, according to Metro.

“Will Smith’s slap was so hard that it somehow changed Liam Payne’s accent,” @MahyarTousi wrote on Twitter.

The viral chatter surrounding Payne’s accent inspired comedian and musician Michael Fry to turn Payne’s monologue into a Celtic masterpiece.

Fry turned Payne’s words into the lyrics, making them perfectly fit his melody. He did, however, change “Will Smith actually used to live behind my house” to “Will Smith used to live in my garden.” Fry’s musical rendition received over 1.2 million views on Twitter.

The comedian said he chose Celtic folk music “because it covers most of the accents Liam had that night, but I think the artists I wanted to emulate were Alt-J, Karine Polwart, Sarah McLachlan [and] Aldous Harding, and I saw the wonderful Niamh Regan the night before, so I was inspired.”
