New Line Developing ‘Isn’t It Scary,’ Follow-Up To 2019 Rebel Wilson Rom-Com ‘Isn’t It Romantic’; April Prosser Scripting
EXCLUSIVE: New Line Cinema is in early development on Isn’t It Scary, a follow-up to its rom-com Isn’t It Romantic starring Rebel Wilson, multiple sources tell Deadline.
April Prosser (Look Both Ways) has been tapped to pen the script. We’re told Todd Garner will produce for Broken Road Productions, alongside frequent collaborators Gina Mathews and Grant Scharbo of Little Engine Entertainment, though these deals haven’t yet closed, as it’s early days here. No other talent attachments have been formalized at this time.

Playfully subverting and satirizing the conventions of the rom-com genre, Isn’t It Romantic grossed over $48 million worldwide upon its release via Warner Bros in 2019. Directed by Todd Strauss-Schulson, the film centers on Natalie (Wilson), an Australian architect living in New York City who is cynical about love and romance. The story takes a fantastical turn when Natalie, after a bump on the head, finds herself trapped in a world that operates by the saccharine and idealized rules of a romantic comedy.
Written by Erin Cardillo and Dana Fox & Katie Silberman, the film’s supporting cast included Liam Hemsworth, Adam, Devine, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Betty Gilpin and Brandon Scott Jones, among others.
The sequel, we’re told, will take a similarly meta approach, riffing on the tropes of the horror genre.
Prosser is an up-and-comer best known for scripting Look Both Ways, a rom-com starring Lili Reinhart, which debuted on Netflix in August 2022. Off of that project, she was been tapped to write The Rewind for Netflix and The Art of French Kissing and Plus One for Amazon. Previously writing movies for Sony, Gloria Sanchez/Lionsgate, CBS Films, and Good Universe/DeLuca, as well as a thriller for Amblin, she’s also developed shows for 20th, FBC, and WBTV. Additionally, she’s worked in animation on Warner’s Smallfoot and Tom & Jerry.
Most recently, Garner, Mathews and Sharbo signed on to produce What Kids Want, a follow-up to the high concept comedies What Women Want and What Men Want, which is in development at Paramount Pictures, as we were first to report.
Prosser is represented by Kaplan/Perrone Entertainment and Ziffren Brittenham.
