Liverpool injury update: Mohamed Salah, Thiago Alcantara, Dominik Szoboszlai, latest news and return dates

Liverpool have been dealt yet another demoralising injury blow ahead of the weekend Premier League action.

Thiago Alcantara is set for another spell on the sidelines after suffering an injury in a five-minute cameo against Arsenal. The substitute appearance was the midfielder’s first minutes in 10 months.

It is a big blow for Jurgen Klopp, who could not prevent his table-topping side from losing 3-1 at Arsenal last time out. Mohamed Salah also remains out, while Dominik Szoboszlai continues to work towards a return.

Here’s a look at the latest Liverpool injuries.

Mohamed Salah

Mohamed Salah was injured representing Egypt at the Africa Cup of Nations last month and continues to work on his recovery from a thigh injury.

"Mo is not ready for this game [against Chelsea on January 31], not ready for the next game and then not,” said Klopp last week.

“He is injured, I'm not sure if that was a misunderstanding in the beginning. He is injured and a muscle injury takes time. It could have been much worse but he is not available in the moment, he is just doing his rehab."

Potential return date: Late February 2024

Thiago Alcantara

In a miserable blow for club and player, Thiago Alcântara is facing another spell on the sidelines after suffering an injury during his first game back after 10 months out.

Thiago made his first appearance of the season against Arsenal, coming on in the 85th minute, according to widespread reports has suffered a new muscle problem that will require further treatment.

The 32-year-old, whose contract expires at the end of the season, last appeared for Liverpool before Sunday's cameo against West Ham. He last start came against Wolves in February 2023.

Potential return date: Unknown

Dominik Szoboszlai

Dominik Szoboszlai made his return from a hamstring injury for the 4-1 win over Chelsea late last month but was ruled out of the Gunners defeat due to a similar problem.

“Dom felt in the same area, or pretty much a similar area, to where he was injured before,” Klopp said on Sunday.

“Not in the game, he was fine, and then after the game [he felt it] slightly so we had a look at it and there was now no chance for him to be involved in this game.

“We cannot take any risk. We have to wait for further assessment but it was clear that he cannot be involved today. That’s it, pretty much.”

Potential return date: Unknown

Kostas Tsimikas

Kostas Tsimikas is closing in on a return to action after breaking his collarbone against Arsenal at Anfield in December.

"Kosti is close,” said Klopp last week. “Kosti is actually fit, Kosti just has to wait now for the green light because the bone healing takes much longer, but the plate is doing the job in the moment.

“Now we have to figure out when is one taking enough over, let me say it like that. And then he's in training as well. He was not out that long, like Trent was not, like Dom was not."

Stefan Bajcetic

Promising young midfielder Stefan Bajcetic has not been able to build on what was a breakthrough campaign last season for the Reds with many appearances this time around.

Klopp, however, is hopeful the teenager will be able to return to training in February.

"They [Thiago and Bajcetic] will not be ready for the end of this month,” said Klopp at the start of January.

“It will probably be going into the next month to train with us. But both [with] no complications, progressing."

Potential return date: Unknown

Ben Doak

Ben Doak is another promising young talent but may face a while out of action after suffering a knee injury in December.

"That's not a good one,” said assistant boss Pep Lijnders in December.

“He teared his lateral meniscus, which needs surgery. That one will take [a] longer time. He is young, he is a fit guy, he is a positive guy so for sure he will come back stronger, and we need him to come back with the same fire he has with the ball, how he was. He can take time and we will wait for him."

Potential return date: Unknown

Joel Matip

Joel Matip is unlikely to play again this season after suffering a serious knee injury in December.
