Liverpool transfer boost as Bryan Mbeumo opens door to summer Brentford exit

Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo is on Liverpool’s transfer radar and has said he wants to play in the “biggest competitions, at the best clubs”.

Liverpool have been admirers of the 24-year-old for a number of months now.

An ankle injury kept the Cameroon international out from December to March, but he still managed to score nine goals and register six assists in 25 Premier League appearances this season.

Mbeumo has regularly been singled out for praise by Brentford manager Thomas Frank since his August 2019 move from French club Troyes for a then-club record fee of £5.6million.

In total, Mbeumo has scored 50 goals and provided a further 42 assists in 200 total appearances for the Bees. His current deal expires in the summer of 2026, but Brentford retain the option to trigger another year’s extension.

Liverpool remain interested in Mbeumo, who is not seeking an immediate exit from Brentford but is understood to be open to a new challenge.

The Reds are targeting attacking reinforcements under new boss Arne Slot after a number of high-profile exits in recent years, including those of Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino.

Mbeumo is a versatile attacker who can play on the right of a front three, as part of a two-man strike force, or even as a lone striker. He featured for Cameroon at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

“I have spent five years at Brentford, at a club that has allowed me to grow and pass a milestone but yes, I would like to play in the biggest competitions, at the best clubs”, he told French newspaper L’Equipe.

“It is tantalising to see some big clubs interested in me. We will see. You have to be ready for the future.”

In an interview with Standard Sport back in August, Mbeumo said: “I would like the win the Champions League. Anything is possible.”
