Liverpool vs Newcastle - LIVE!

Mohamed Salah's second-half brace made up for a missed penalty as Liverpool kicked off the new year three points clear atop the Premier League standings with a 4-2 victory over Newcastle United at a rain-drenched Anfield.

Liverpool dominated the game, and Salah, who had fired a penalty straight at goalkeeper Martin Dubravka, finally broke the deadlock in the 49th minute when Darwin Nunez cut the ball across to the Egyptian for a close range finish. Alexander Isak scored against the run of play with Newcastle's second shot of the game when he ran onto a through ball from Anthony Gordon and knocked it past keeper Alisson into the far corner.

However, Curtis Jones put the home side back in front in the 74th minute with a tap-in after a pass across goal from Diogo Jota, and Cody Gakpo scored shortly after. Sven Botman pulled one back for Newcastle before Salah, who was playing his last game before departing for the African Cup of Nations, struck from the penalty spot after Jota had been fouled to seal the win.

Liverpool moved three points clear at the top of the Premier League as they survived what threatened to be a frustrating night with a chaotic 4-2 win over Newcastle.

The Reds had 18 shots in the opening 45 minutes, one of those a Mohamed Salah penalty that was saved by Martin Dubravka, but failed to score with a single one of them, as Newcastle somehow made it to to the break with the match still goalless.

Six goals followed in the second-half, four of them for Liverpool as the hosts finally made their dominance count.

21:47 , Matt Verri

DOESN'T MISS THIS TIME!

That, surely, is that. More composed this time, slots it into the bottom corner.

21:47 , Matt Verri

That's a strange decision.

Jota went round Dubravka, took about three steps and then went down. No idea why he didn't just put the ball into the empty net.

Anyway, VAR has confirmed the decision. Not sure about that.

Salah is going to take it.

PENALTY LIVERPOOL!

21:45 , Matt Verri

This is madness.

Jota clean through after a sensational pass from Mac Allister, goes past Dubravka... goes down. Penalty!

Took a long, long time to throw himself to the ground.

GOAL! Liverpool 3-2 Newcastle | Sven Botman 81'

21:43 , Matt Verri

HOLD ON.

Klopp furious on the touchline.

So, so easy. Corner swung in, Botman gets up and Alisson doesn't move as the header finds the far corner.

GOAL! Liverpool 3-1 Newcastle | Cody Gakpo 78'

21:39 , Matt Verri

That should do it!

Salah bends a brilliant ball into the middle,. Gakpo completely free. It's a scuffed finish, but good enough to bobble past Dubravka.

Liverpool 2-1 Newcastle

21:38 , Matt Verri

76 mins: Mac Allister makes his return for Liverpool, replacing Endo.

Can the hosts now just see this out? They're pushing for a third goal that would kill this match off.

GOAL! Liverpool 2-1 Newcastle | Curtis Jones 74'

21:36 , Matt Verri

Brilliant goal!

Can't say Liverpool don't deserve that.

Ball played through to Jota, clean through on goal but he keeps it cool to just slide it to his left and leave Jones a tap-in.

Liverpool 1-1 Newcastle

21:35 , Matt Verri

73 mins: Alexander-Arnold out of position, Gordon completely free on the left wing.

He cuts inside, clips a cross to the back post where Longstaff brings it down... and goes down.

Did Endo foul him? Referee says no.

Liverpool 1-1 Newcastle

21:33 , Matt Verri

71 mins: For the xG fans among you, Liverpool are winning that particular battle 4.25-0.32.

For those who have no idea what on earth I'm talking about, that means Liverpool should be winning. Comfortably.

Liverpool 1-1 Newcastle

21:31 , Matt Verri

69 mins: Liverpool corner, match continues to be played at a frantic pace.

Falls for Gakpo, Dubravka just about keeps it out! Comes back to Gravenberch, smashes it over the bar.

Believe that's now ten saves from Dubravka tonight.

Liverpool 1-1 Newcastle

21:28 , Matt Verri

67 mins: And that might be the easiest decision of the night.

Konate brings the ball forward, heavy touch and Joelinton wipes him out. Yellow card.

Joelinton looks like he's been dragged through a swamp after that, so much water on the pitch.

Liverpool 1-1 Newcastle

21:27 , Matt Verri

66 mins: Endo the latest player into the book, yellow card for bringing down Gordon.

It came seconds after Liverpool had another opportunity, Dubravka parrying the ball straight out to Jones who couldn't do enough with the rebound.

Filthy conditions at Anfield - rain pouring, wind swirling.

Liverpool 1-1 Newcastle

21:26 , Matt Verri

64 mins: Nunez could have scored about eight goals tonight.

Lovely ball clipped into the box, Nunez free in the middle and he heads wide of the far post. Another chance wasted.

Three Liverpool changes. Gravenberch, Jota and Gakpo all on, Nunez, Diaz and Szoboszlai off.

Liverpool 1-1 Newcastle

21:23 , Matt Verri

62 mins: The Liverpool pressure is building - Newcastle struggling to get out.

Diaz jinks away from the challenges, gets the shot away from just outside the area. Dubravka with yet another save.

Liverpool 1-1 Newcastle

21:22 , Matt Verri

60 mins: Diaz with a great turn out on the ring wing, fires the ball across the face of goal... nobody there.

Newcastle then win a cheap free-kick, Liverpool fans and players starting to get very frustrated again.

Liverpool 1-1 Newcastle

21:19 , Matt Verri

57 mins: Liverpool's turn to look a bit rattled.

Van Dijk brings down Almiron, who is on for Miley.

Free-kick is a loopy one, Alisson able to claim that with minimum fuss.

GOAL! Liverpool 1-1 Newcastle | Alexander Isak 54'

21:16 , Matt Verri

Out of nothing!

Gordon skips past a couple of Liverpool players, and plays a great pass through to Isak.

He's onside, and the finish is a composed one past Alisson.

Liverpool 1-0 Newcastle

21:14 , Matt Verri

52 mins: Brilliant save!

This could get away from Newcastle in a hurry.

It's Salah this time who plays the ball across the face of goal, Nunez unable to turn it in from close range.

And Nunez is in seconds later... Dubravka saves!

GOAL! Liverpool 1-0 Newcastle | Mohamed Salah 49'

21:10 , Matt Verri

There is the goal!

Diaz plays it through to Nunez, he opts not to go for goal and instead squares it to leave Salah with a tap-in.

Liverpool 0-0 Newcastle

21:10 , Matt Verri

48 mins: Guimaraes continues to look really composed on the ball for Newcastle.

All very frantic around him, but he's had some lovely moments in midf

Back underway!

21:07 , Matt Verri

Up and running for the second-half.

21:03 , Matt Verri

Just the 18 shots for Liverpool in that first-half. Newcastle had one.

A fair few of those were pretty desperate as the half went on, but their dominance was clear.

As was the case last month against Man United, Liverpool unable to make it count.

Biggest moment of the half...

20:53 , Matt Verri

Not convincing from Salah.

HT: Liverpool 0-0 Newcastle

20:52 , Matt Verri

Loud boos as the half-time whistle goes... those are aimed at the referee.

Liverpool utterly dominant but nothing to show for it, and they started to lose their heads towards the end of the half.

Klopp needs to get them back on track.

Liverpool 0-0 Newcastle

Liverpool continue to be frustrated.

Liverpool 0-0 Newcastle

It's a yellow card for the Newcastle midfielder, who got the ball first but then followed through on Salah.

Liverpool 0-0 Newcastle

20:46 , Matt Verri

45 mins: Liverpool demand a free-kick on the edge of the area - given the other way for dissent from Diaz! Yellow card.

Five minutes added on, it's all getting very heated inside Anfield. Home fans are furious.

Liverpool 0-0 Newcastle

20:45 , Matt Verri

44 mins: More groans, as a Liverpool counter falls apart.

Salah with a lovely touch to Szoboszlai, he has Nunez charging clean through but the pass is really weak. Easily intercepted.

Liverpool 0-0 Newcastle

20:43 , Matt Verri

42 mins: Home fans starting to get frustrated - Newcastle growing into the game isn't helping the mood.

Lots of space on offer for both teams, hard to believe we haven't had a goal.

Liverpool 0-0 Newcastle

20:40 , Matt Verri

39 mins: WOW.

That would have been outrageous. Alexander-Arnold basically on the byline, bouncing ball and he lashes it, outside of the foot, over Dubravka and off the woodwork.

Liverpool 0-0 Newcastle

20:39 , Matt Verri

38 mins: Decision stands - another good one from the assistant on that side.

Isak with just about offside, Newcastle denied an opening goal.

GOOO... OFFSIDE!

20:38 , Matt Verri

And now Newcastle think they have the lead!

Ball clipped to the back post, Burn free and he beats Alisson with the header.

Offside flag up though - was Isak off in the build-up?

Over to VAR.

Liverpool 0-0 Newcastle

20:37 , Matt Verri

36 mins: Nunez has to score!

Just a long ball forward, Schar not strong enough as he appeals for a free-kick and Nunez is clean through.

Only Dubravka to beat... can't do so. Comfortable enough save.

Liverpool 0-0 Newcastle

20:34 , Matt Verri

33 mins: The Magpies are starting to give Liverpool something to think about.

Longstaff finds himself in loads of space in midfield, allowed to drive forward.

Nice pass through to Miley, but Gomez does well to stop him turning and getting a shot away.

Liverpool 0-0 Newcastle

20:32 , Matt Verri

31 mins: Newcastle come alive at long last.

Isak and Longstaff combine nicely, before the striker has a shot blocked by Van Dijk.

Flag is up though, Longstaff a couple of yards offside.

Liverpool 0-0 Newcastle

20:31 , Matt Verri

30 mins: Incredible that this match is still 0-0. Liverpool so dominant, two or three goals wouldn't flatter them.

They're starting to lose patience a bit though, shots coming in from all over the place.

Liverpool 0-0 Newcastle

20:29 , Matt Verri

28 mins: Guimaraes sees the ball run free, can't resist the urge to slide in and ends up going in late on Endo.

Free-kick, yellow card... that's now eight of those in the Premier League for him this season.

Liverpool 0-0 Newcastle

20:27 , Matt Verri

26 mins: Still one-way traffic.

Jones gets in behind the Newcastle defence, Miley slides in to concede a corner.

Pinged out to the edge of the area, Alexander-Arnold can't get the shot away though as he tries to quickly bring it down.

Liverpool 0-0 Newcastle

20:24 , Matt Verri

23 mins: That was a really poor penalty.

Went for full power, nowhere near the corner and it's a comfortable save in the end.

Alexander-Arnold should score from the rebound, slices the shot miles over the bar though.

Liverpool 0-0 Newcastle

20:23 , Matt Verri

SAVED!

Salah steps up to take the penalty, but Dubravka makes the save!

Well then - still goalless.

PENALTY LIVERPOOL!

20:22 , Matt Verri

VAR called upon again!

Diaz goes past Botman, takes a step and then throws himself to the ground.

Referee points to the spot - imagine this won't be overturned.

Liverpool 0-0 Newcastle

20:20 , Matt Verri

19 mins: Fairly lengthy VAR check, as ever.

It looks pretty obviously offside - eventually that's confirmed. Nunez offside as Jones played him in.

GOOO... OFFSIDE!

20:19 , Matt Verri

Liverpool have the lead that their performance has deserved.... ot not!

Newcastle press right up, one pass from Van Dijk opens them up.

Jones plays Nunez through, he doesn't get the shot away. Falls to Diaz, he fires past Dubravka.

The flag is up though. Offside.

Liverpool 0-0 Newcastle

20:16 , Matt Verri

15 mins: Newcastle continue to try and play their way through the Liverpool press... it's not really working.

The Reds look like they're going to keep winning the ball back high up the pitch, Klopp will be enjoying what he's seeing.

Liverpool 0-0 Newcastle

20:13 , Matt Verri

12 mins: Liverpool on the charge again - Newcastle hanging on.

Nunez plays it to Salah, not a great pass but he gets it back. Six yards out, only Dubravka to beat but it's a good save.

Jones hammers the rebound back at goal, great block.

Liverpool 0-0 Newcastle

20:12 , Matt Verri

11 mins: Liverpool corner, swung in right on top of Dubravka.

Nunez puts him under pressure, but the Newcastle goalkeeper is up to the task and punches it away.

Liverpool 0-0 Newcastle

20:09 , Matt Verri

9 mins: Huge block!

Brilliant from Longstaff in midfield to win the ball back high up the pitch. Isak plays in Miley, who takes a bit too long to get the shot away and Gomez gets across the block.

Longstaff takes the resulting corner, straight out of play.

Liverpool 0-0 Newcastle

20:08 , Matt Verri

7 mins: Gordon has already made a couple of fouls, but this time he's the one sent flying.

Gomez flies in, gets nowhere near the ball and clatters into the former Everton man.

Liverpool 0-0 Newcastle

20:05 , Matt Verri

5 mins: Alexander-Arnold whipped it in with pace, Newcastle just about clear.

Livramento then topples over under pressure from Diaz, and is delighted to hear the whistle. Newcastle taking their sweet time over this, first chance they've had to breathe.

Liverpool 0-0 Newcastle

20:04 , Matt Verri

3 mins: Newcastle haven't left their own box, nevermind their own half.

Jones with a great turn, draws the foul from Gordon right on the edge of the area.

Liverpool 0-0 Newcastle

20:03 , Matt Verri

2 mins: Lovely move inside 30 seconds, as Endo slides a pass through to Szoboszlai. He's crowded out though, shot blocked.

Diaz then fires a ball across the face of goal, cleared with Salah lurking.

Alexander-Arnold tries his luck from the edge of the area, deflected just wide! Some start.

KICK-OFF!

Final pre-match thoughts from Klopp

Liverpool boss in relaxed mood ahead of kick-off.

How it stands...

19:50 , Matt Verri

Reminder that Liverpool are top of the league going into this match.

Victory would take them three points clear of Aston Villa, and five ahead of Arsenal and Man City. Pep Guardiola's side would still have a game in hand.

Newcastle will move above Brighton and Man United and into seventh should they pull off a surprise win.

Klopp on Liverpool sitting top of the table

19:43 , Matt Verri

"When Kevin de Bruyne was warming up, the whole country was beginning to shake," he tells Sky Sports.

"Nothing has happened yet. We will see what the outcome will be.

"Besides Trippier, it's Newcastle's strongest line-up. I don't like these talks about the table."

Van Dijk switches off from football

19:29 , Matt Verri

Liverpool haven't played since Boxing Day - did Virgil van Dijk spend his time off keeping tabs on their Premier League rivals?

"Not at all. I didn't even watch football. I was spending time with my family. We've been away so much recently.

"We've had a couple of days to spend with our families before we focus on another big game.

"I don't speak about winning the league at this point. I don't think anyone in this team will do that because we know from experience that anything can happen."

Pre-match thoughts from Eddie Howe

19:23 , Matt Verri

The Newcastle boss explains the absences of Kieran Trippier and Callum Wilson.

Firmino in the building!

19:16 , Matt Verri

Roberto Firmino is in attendance at Anfield tonight.

The forward left Liverpool on a free transfer in the summer, joining Saudi Arabian side Al-Ahli.

There are already reports that he is unhappy though, and a move back to England could be on the cards this month.

Mac Allister returns

19:08 , Matt Verri

Mac Allister is back in the squad for Liverpool, with the midfielder named on the bench tonight.

Diaz starts in the front three, with Gomez at left-back as expected and Jones getting the nod in midfield.

Big news for Newcastle is that Trippier misses out on the squad entirely. There is no Wilson either.

Almiron is only on the bench, with Joelinton starting in a more advanced role.

Howe: We need to be near-perfect

18:49 , Matt Verri

Newcastle are in poor form, they've so often struggled at Anfield, and they still have a long injury list.

A clash with the League leaders wouldn't be high on Eddie Howe's wishlist right name, and he is fully aware just how difficult the test facing his side is.

"There have been a couple of painful games against Liverpool, for sure," Howe said.

"The game last season at Anfield was particularly tough for us. This season wasn't any easier. The positive thing in both of those games was we performed really well and we were competitive and gave Liverpool a really good game.

"For us, we need to be near-perfect in this game. This is a really tough game for us."

History on Liverpool's side

18:43 , Matt Verri

These sides have already met this season, back in August.

Liverpool were a goal down and a man down at St James' Park... but Darwin Nunez struck twice late on to snatch an unlikely victory.

Newcastle have not beaten Liverpool since 2015 - their last League win at Anfield came in 1994.

Klopp: Newcastle have been unlucky

18:34 , Matt Verri

Jurgen Klopp is sympathetic towards Newcastle's struggle for form and the club's ongoing crisis, believing their return to the Champions League has played a key factor.

“Newcastle have a lot of injuries but they played European football now which they haven’t done fifty times in a row," Klopp said.

So it is just recovery and then go again. It is an adjustment and it has been a bit of a problem. I am too long in the business. I know anything can happen.

“Newcastle did incredibly well. It is unlucky they have that number of injuries. They had good spells in the games they lost.

“They have a really good idea but Eddie Howe had to play the same line-up too often. The guys who play all the time are tired and the guys who come back have no rhythm – we had that situation plenty of times.”

Some transfer news for you...

18:10 , Matt Verri

Settle in... and get excited Liverpool fans. Maybe.

Kylian Mbappe is now free to discuss a move with clubs around Europe, as he enters the final six months of his PSG deal.

The Ligue 1 side are still holding out hope of agreeing a contract extension, but Real Madrid remain the favourites to sign Mbappe on a free transfer in the summer.

However, Le Parisien claim that the Frenchman would be open to joining Liverpool, who are seen as the big threat to Real getting their man.

Liverpool team news

17:40 , Matt Verri

Liverpool could have Alexis Mac Allister back in the squad for tonight's visit of Newcastle.

The midfielder has been missing since the 2-0 win at Sheffield United on December 6 and remains a doubt.

Jurgen Klopp told reporters on Friday: "We will see what he can do today - if he can step into team training or not. The decision is not done yet, it's pretty early [in the day] and the doctor is not here. So, we will see.

"If Macca could be back for Newcastle, that would be outstanding."

It is not all good news, however, with left-back Andy Robertson's recovery from a dislocated shoulder likely to keep him out now for the whole of January.
