Liverpool cemented their status as Premier League champions-elect with a 2-0 win over rivals Manchester United at Anfield on Sunday, moving 16 points clear at the top of the table.

The Reds, now on 64 points, also have a game in hand over defending champions Manchester City, who lie second on 48 points after Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace.

Jurgen Klopp’s men will now surely claim their first Premier League title, to go with the Champions League and Club World Cup successes picked up over the last year.

Mathematically, Liverpool need a further 30 points from their remaining 16 games to be absolutely certain of lifting the title.

Were they continue their remarkable winning run – they’ve dropped points just once all season – that means that, barring rearranged fixtures, they would have the chance to become champions against Man City at the Eitihad when the two sides meet on April 4, even if Pep Guardiola’s side were to win every game between now and then.

However, any points dropped by City would potentially bring forward Liverpool’s crowning moment – indeed, a couple of slip ups could even see the Reds given the chance to claim the title in eight games’ time, in the Merseyside derby against Everton at Goodison Park.

Sunday’s win over United extended Liverpool’s unbeaten record to 39 games, meaning the aforementioned meeting with City in April also has the potential to be the match in which they could equal Arsenal’s record run of 49 matches without defeat.
